10 gallon Planted tank and neons

If it's going to be a planted tank, I'd say at least 8. You'll have a nice school that way.

I think just mabey you could get away with 10 or 12 i think you could that would look better than 8 . more colors more beutiful fish

What kind of filter do you have on this 10 gallon? With a good filter you could probably do 15 neons, they have very little bioload. If the filtration is not so good, 10 should be fine. Neons aren't the most hardy fish though, and won't survive a cycle. You should either do a traditional cycle with danios and trade them out for neons later, or consider fishless cycling, there are lots of threads here that explain how it works.

One more thing, the neons i have access to at most of the stores are inbred and weak and there seems to always be at least one carrier of neon tetra disease in any batch. If you can afford to use cardinals instead, you could have a couple less total fish (say, 8 with mediocre filtration. 13 with good filtration) but they would be hardier. I know that books all say cardinals are weaker but in my experience the books are out of date. I recently did a fishless cycle and stocked all the cardinals in my sig, and didn't lose a single one. When i buy neons, i usually get around a 50% initial mortality rate within the first 48 hours. Maybe i am just unlucky?

How about with otos?

I have also planted 10 gal tank and wanna keep neons in them with otos.

So, how many neons and how many otos would be suitable? :)

well i have a 5-6 gallon tank and i have 14 neons
and an angel??

i'd never keep and angel in that!!!
Yea Yea i know that you need lots of space for angels but my angel is weird i seems to be happy in my small tank.
an angel in a 10g

told you he was happy did he?

how long have you had this angel? not too long i assume.

You could have 8 - 14 in that tank. Neon tetras are schooling fish and like each others company, so they dont mind at all if they're a little squished.

i hate overstocking...but i still think you could keep upto 20 neons (with nothing else though) in a 10 g

really cant understand why anyone would want to keep just neons on their own though...each to their own i suppose
