As a newbie I would be open to other suggestions, but I tried this out and it works really, really well.
I noticed that after cleaning the glass, gravel and generally doing water changes, there's always a few items floating about the tank. Also, till I've done any CO2 in the tank, my plants were loosing bits of leaves which were also floating around.
So I simply took my small net, bent the handle and hung it in the water near the outlet of my internal filter. This way, it's in the path of the flow and all debris gets caught in there. It really works like a charm, pic below. I left if for 24 hours and it was full of stuff ... and my tank is nicely clean now.
I now put it in for short period right after tank cleaning. At first I was a little worried that some of the (especially smaller) fish might get caught in it but that never happened. In fact, some of them go in there to peck on food caught up in there, and happilly swim out.
I use my exterior / interior magnet swipe to keep the handle at the right angle.
