Did another water test today but to my surprise the Ammonia is at 0 or maybe almost, but my NitrIte is way up 0.5-0.7 and NitrAte at 20 ppm. Could this possibly be a Nitrite spike? I see no stress on my fish so far but i did lost my sailfin pleco yesterday :( I just did a 20% water change this morning and I would like to know if there's a possibility of losing anymore fish and what can I do besides doing water changes daily to prevent Nitrite from going over the top. Any ideas is very much appreaciated.. Thanks

Has your tank finished cycling yet? Or it's in the middle of it? During nitrite spike, the reading can go up to 8-10ppm :X

I think adding Nitra-zorb can help reducing the toxic level apart from the water changes. Good luck!

Feline I just set up the tank 2 weeks ago, What's a Nitro-sorb, is it like a bacteria in a bottle like bio-spira or cycle. I'm going to my LFS tomorrow just wondering if this stuff is available in Canada?

if you can, do bio spira, that stuff is amazing! the good kind is not cheap though

shark the things your tank is going through right now are normal and you should read more about the cycling process of fish tanks online.

Or go to the Library and get a book:) Definately keep doing large water changes until Nitrite dissappears.

They don't have bio-spira here in canada i think. I went to my LFS yesterday and they told me they never heard of it all they have is the nutrafin Cycle which i have been using so far....

Just wondering if you were able to get your NitrIte down, what you did? I added bio spira to my tank the other night and NitrIte level is still between 2.0-5.0 :X :/

Oh, and BTW, I ordered it online through The Fish Store and it arrived 7 days later. IF I buy more, I'll be driving across the border to handle it myself! ;)

My tank is cycle now :D the nitrite spike lasted about a week and what I did to drop it to 0 is 15% water changes everyother day and adding "cycle" bacteria on the bottle everytime I change. Also I would suggest doing around 25 % water change if that nitrite is still stubborn....I did a 25% water change the day before my parameters hit 0..

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread.

Glad to hear your levels are normal.

Sharky, sorry for the late reply... to answer your question, Nitra-zorb (by Aquatics Pharmaceuticals) is said to remove traces of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Some say it works, other don't.

Anyway congrats that you've cycled your tank! :D
