ambient light

Quick question if you don't mind. I have a window about 5 feet from my tanks and while they aren't getting direct sunlight there is definitely ambient light coming through. My algae isn't out of control but wondering if you think it'd be a good idea to black out the window or if I should reduce...

So obviously you want to leave the lights on for 10-12 hours a day on your fish tank and no more, but I haven't seen any general consensus on the difference in light levels between the day/night cycle and I'd love to hear everybody's opinions. I don't know if there have been any studies about...
