Efx 600 Motor Or Cheap External Filter

My Aquamanta EFX 600 external filter has given up the ghost. Fortunately I run on two filters so the tank is still going!   I need to replace the motor. It is a sealed unit that appears fixed within the top section of the filter.   It seems daft to buy an entire new filter + media etc., so I'm...

Red Line Torpedoes, Silver Shark, Angel And Plants For Sale - Leiceste

Hi Charlie,   I tried to ring you but you were out I think.   I live in Leicester and I'm definitely interested in the torpedos and silver shark. I have a 6' tank with clowns, silver dollars, silver sharks and one lone torpedo so they would fit in great.   I haven't had an angel before - any...

    Convict With Growths

Not having the luckiest couple of months with my fish! In my other tank I have a convict cichild with warty growths at the base of the fins. My googling suggests Lymphocystis Virus - I hope it isn't as it looks pretty hard to get rid of He appears to be eating and swimming around ok. 350l...

    4 Dead Fish

A quick update - no more fish losses since 28/12 so I'm hoping this little saga is over. I've cleaned one of the filters and will do the other at the weekend, and I've increased oxygen from an air pump and more height from the filter output (loads of bubbles throughout most of the tank now)...

That's a very interesting idea - how would I check? Maybe I should replace both heaters just to be sure...

    4 Dead Fish

Ahh I see. I haven't seen them rubbing on anything... but I'll keep an eye open just in case. I'm using sand in this tank rather than gravel, and probably once every 2 water changes I will try and suck up any rubbish on the sand. I don't do it every time as it is such a big tank with massive...

    4 Dead Fish

Hi Sue - what do you mean by flashing? That's not a term I'm familiar with. I've just redone my water tests with the liquid tests: Nitrate 25 Nitrite 0 ph 6.8 Ammonia - a slight trace possibly 0.1 Copper 0 I also did a 6-1 test strip just in case anything else jumped out. One thing on there...

    4 Dead Fish

Darn it - one of the baby bristlenose plecs was dead this morning. I've rung up Severn Trent and they said that there wasn't any emergency work in the area and no extra chemicals were added to the water (they would have sent out letters in advance which is useful to know). Out of the five new...

    4 Dead Fish

Thanks for the support everyone. No further problems since... hopefully we've cracked it. The fish (still) look happy - plenty of movement and eating well. I'll give Java Fern a go... last time I tried plants I ended up spending a long time fishing out a million tiny bits of plant out the tank...

Here he is: I haven't seen that sore before so I'm guessing he did it when thrashing about. The pictures are upside down for some reason.

    4 Dead Fish

Yes it whirled round and round smashing into the glass and bogwood - really scary. Expiry Jan 2014. It might have been a coincidence... At this rate I'm going to have no fish left.

    4 Dead Fish

I got home and put an new air stone on and moved it closer to the bottom of the tank. Then I added some cycle in the tank. 850 litre tank - I had a small bottle that would treat 450 l, so I poured it in. As I did so (and I have no idea if connected or not - I have no idea), one of the big clown...

    4 Dead Fish

Thanks for the input. I think I'll get another air pump for the other end of the tank, and perhaps cut down on their food a bit. If there's any uneaten food at the bottom then that's only going to make things worse. Is it worth trying to get an oxygen testing kit to confirm if this is the problem?

    4 Dead Fish

Yes it does seem odd. I did add those 5 small silver sharks - but I can't really see them adding to the load on the bacteria enough to cause problems. Apart from those the rest have been in for a good long time. Thinking about it I did add a new food this week - floating cichild pellets. I...

    4 Dead Fish

Sounds like a sensible candidate. I've got a powerhead moving the surface of the water and plenty of movement from that and the water coming in from the filters. Having said that the tank has 2 foot depth of water so maybe you are right and the fish in the lower part of the tank aren't getting...

    4 Dead Fish

Unless I'm getting some kind of build up in the sand? The pleccies go quite high in the water anyway as they go right up the bogwood. I've had the water from the filters dropping into the water to try and oxygenate the water - loads of little bubbles in the water from this. The fish shop said...

    4 Dead Fish

Hi, We've had four dead fish in our large tank in the last few days. We haven't had any die in the tank for about a year or so, so this isn't normal! I'm at work so I can't give you the exact water parameters, but they are all within sensible ranges. No ammonia, nitrite, small amount of...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

It seems that putting in more prawns and mussels has had no adverse affect so that's good! Plus the catfish is eating. So no idea what blew their lips up! I've still got a dollar missing - quite how I can lose a 4" fish I have no idea... I've moved everything!

    Setting Up New Large Tank

BNS on their way. I put my air pipe in with no stone or anything :) 2 days later I've got clear water hurrah! Less light and the algae isn't quite as rampant as before so that's good too. Now the bad news... Got a lovely new catfish who is very shy. I left a prawn and a mussel in the tank for...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

I've got a couple of big plecs in the other tank which I could transfer in - but I'm not sure how effective they'd be at cleaning up the algae. Any recommendations on what I could get to keep on top of the algae? Tank mates will be dollars, silver sharks, clown fish (only dollars in there atm)...
