    Walsted?

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. The lighting is led, I am going to get rid of the heater and adjust stock to cope with temperate water. Would little plecs (no idea of variety, they are 8cm long and won't get much bigger) be ok at room temperature?

    Walsted?

Got back from being away today, and smart meter reckons £2.10 spent most on electricity! Only things on are two pond pumps, external filter for aquarium, and 300W heater set to 27oC. So two questions: 1) Would giving the pumps and external filters a good clean help efficiency? 2) Have been...

    New pond

There's a net to stop fish being extracted and leaves being added! Mostly various types of goldfish: red orange koi yellow and black. Most of these were inherited when we bought the house 7 years ago.

    New pond

I'm transferring fish and frogs from an old pond to a new one. They are both 1500l preformed. For a couple of weeks I've been moving water over, and for a while actually had the ponds connected, so the water in both is the same. I've moved most of the plants over too, and taken the opportunity...

    Dealing with nitrate

I believe that the Walsted method is to use plants possibly even instead of filtration, but this would mean VERY low stocking levels indeed.

    Who’s the culprit

It's amazing how good fish are at hiding, and it sounds like there's plenty of bigger fish for it to want to hide from. Sounds like you've a lot in your tank?

    Holiday water

Morning, I was wondering what others did regarding water changes when they go away, particularly those who do big changes. Do you simply do a big change before going away, and/or do you reduce the frequency before this so that the fish get used to a lower frequency? I'm going to get away for...

    Ammonia levels help

If you were to use 50:50 RO:tap then that would halve the ammonia but still leave some minerals. Maybe that with Prime?

    London nitrates

This is the tank with the floating plants doing well. Two questions: 1) Would it be better to take a load out so that there's plenty of room for new growth (lower nitrates) 2) How careful do I need to be about the filter getting clogged up with all the bits of plant that fall down? Ps I...

    Brown algae?

Hoping that with nitrates down (floating plants and 50% RO) plus less lights due to floating plants it won't get worse. What do you think about trimming or replacing the plants?

    Brown algae?

No, not got any! How many would you suggest, and are they too big for my clowns to munch on? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zebra-nerite-algae-eating-snail-Tropical-Fish-Aquarium-live/303473158635?hash=item46a868e9eb:g:~dkAAOSwDStdYTFF

    Brown algae?

Have been reading about it, I think the high nitrates (see other thread) make diatoms likely. Since posting that thread I've gone to 50% RO water and got lots of fast growing floating plants which have bought nitrate right down. So hopefully cutting off the effected leaves should do the trick?

When I last moved house I moved the fish tank to a friend's place a few weeks before the move, then moved it to my house a few days after moving in. It meant that when moving the fish, I could concentrate on getting that right.

    dimmer and timer

I guess another solution, if you have two lights in the tank, would be to have them on different timers.

Calculating volume required to change temp

With the same ratios and starting temperatures you'd get the same results. If you want to predict what will happen, it will be the mean of the two temperatures taking into account the amount of both. ((Temp A x volume A) + (Temp B X volume B))/(volume A + volume B)

    London nitrates

So I've finally got my own RO system Yesterday I filled two buckets with RO, then left overnight to adjust to room temp, 20oC. Today I put the RO water in another bucket, about halfway full, then used the hot tap to top up the bucket and reach 26oC. So my tank (200l) had a 20% water change...
