Hrm yeah, true. I know I'll get them for sure if I decide to go for the first option - the small community. I'm still unsure though, it's a question of having many different, smaller varieties against having a few (still a variety) of the larger ones.

I thought they were pretty renowned for being one of those groups of fish which just disappear into the tank and never come out. xD It's something to keep in mind though.

The fact they're quite active, and snake like. Dwarf snakeheads are an obvious alternative but they lead to the same issue as in the OP anyway, just replace bichir with dwarf snakehead!

Wrong forum I'm sure, but basically I've managed to lose one of the clear plastic clips that you use to mount T5 lights, specifically the bit that clips around the tube itself. Does anyone have a spare they'd be willing to send out? :)

Will this work and prevent the compost from dirtying up the water constantly? The reason I ask is because 'capping' the compost with a layer of sand seems rather difficult, but there we are.

I guess it's one of those risks you take with fish that are severely inbred. Same reason why most guppies now are actually quite 'delicate', for want of a better word.

I am unsure. It just seems to me that the word 'shrimp' equates to food for more 'aggressive' fish.    That's fair enough. I'm planning a planted setup, but as well as that I wish to avoid anything that's going to do its best to hide constantly.

I've decided against trying to keep puffers etc. together. I've a smaller tank which I'll get some DPs in, and leave the 240 for whatever.

I've just been cross referencing pH that puffers and those dwarf puffers need, it seems they both err towards acidity from neutral.

I wouldn't put too much thought into what literally amounts to a small amount of water. I don't put 'bag water' into my aquarium, one could argue that it contains all the 'panic chemicals' that you mention, or that the LFS's water might actually be in better condition, or somewhat similar to...

It's a juwel 240, so approximately 55 gallons. I am more worried about the birchir munching the puffers, rather than the other way around!   Edit: The reason I said 'snake like' is because I'm open to dwarf snakeheads etc. too.

Ah, thanks a lot. Admittedly I'm wary of open topped tanks in general, due to the obvious evaporation 'problems'. Though those luminaires aren't ridiculously pricey either.
