Neon Tetra With Rapid Gill And Mouth Movement

HI I am going through the exact same situation right now with one of my five tetras, and just wondered what the outcome was in this particular case? As I say, the problem is only with ONE of my five neons, and has become noticable over that last 48 hours. It does not seem interested in...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 24 After reading on several forums that excessively hight Nitrites could actually slow or stop the cycle, I decided to do a massive water change in efforts to bring the levels down to a 'readable' amount. Once draining the water and replacing with dechlorinated water, I redosed Ammo and got...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 22 The AMMO has FINALLY dropped to '0.5' for the first time, but the NITRITE shows no sign of dropping below the '5.0' mark (thus off the chart). I have read that a PWC to bring down the Nitrite to a more readable level could well speed-up the final conversion to NitrAtes. Does anyone have...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

Wow, excellent explanation there. Thank you. :good: (Ok.. so as I had earlier concluded.. all IS going well.. just sit, wait and redose Ammo only when very near a 'Nil' reading.)

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 16 - A DELAYED REALISATION Hi all, the following has JUST occured to me, after reading a few other 'Fishless Cycle' articles.... If/when I have been getting AMMO readings which are lesser than 4.0ppm, shouldn't I then have redosed the AMMO back upto around 4.0 each time? Surely this is the...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 16 After several days of nothing much at all happening, I am glad to see a further reducion in AMMO today. (Seemed like it had just frozen for a few days). After yesterdays addition of a very small pinch of food flakes I am now hoping the bacteria/microlife I can see at all depths of the...

Different 'ph' Readings From Same Tank - Is This Possible?

Thanks Hayley. I really hadn't realised the fact that PH around 8.0 is a good thing during this time. So.. all looks fine then for now. (I'm just getting so impatient waiting for the levels to become safe for my new fish, but.. better this than put fish through a horrible time or even...

Different 'ph' Readings From Same Tank - Is This Possible?

Ok.. cheers. There are no 'living' things in the tank at the moment. No Fish, No Plants or Wood. Normal 'tank essentials' like: Filter and Heater and two 'cave' ornaments and gravel substrate. But I can't wait to get my first fish! :)

Different 'ph' Readings From Same Tank - Is This Possible?

Hmmm, thanks for the speedy relpy 'OLD SPOUSE' Ok.. given that we know PH tests are prone to mis-leading results during cycles then, do you feel I should still have any concerns that the results at the moment are so high? (in relation to the 'normal' range of PH compatibles being 7.0 - 7.6)...

Different 'ph' Readings From Same Tank - Is This Possible?

Hi all I am currently almost 2 weeks into a 'Fishless Cycle' and all appears to be going fine (mostly). Now, I do know that unless there is a suspision that the PH has fell dramatically causing a 'slow down' or 'crash', there is perhaps NO need to take or worry about PH tests at all during the...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 12 With AMMO falling steadily and NITRITES rising nicely (as expected) I fealt it might be just worth taking a PH reading, just to ensure all is well, (no slow downs or potential crashes etc). Turned out to be: 7.6 (borderline higher). So, also did a HIGH PH test which gives a reading of...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

Yeah, cheers Justin. Totally agree with you on the 'slow increase of AMMO again'.. makes good sense regarding the Nitrites. :good: Just starting to look a stocking ideas.. the missus has seen some 'Elephant Fish' and has asked if we could put one or more of these in our tank, ....any...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 7 Actually found some of the 'Kleen Off' Ammonia today (Hurray!). So, using the Ammonium Calculator I found I needed to add 1.8ml to bring the current level upto around 4.00ppm. Added the dose, waited about 30 mins for complete circulation etc, Did the test.. looks pretty much 'bang on'...

    60 Litre 'fishless' Cycle Log

DAY 6 I have decided to take the 'Ammonia Dosing' route now, as the 'Fish Food' method looks like it can/will be hit and miss. I CAN NOT find the appropriate Ammonia in local shops/chemist so have ordered a bottle of 'KLEEN OFF' brand ammonia via the internet. Expect to receive it early next...

A Quick Hello From An Excited And Apprehensive 'newbie'

Thanks for the welcome folks. :) ..And thanks for the feedback on my initial fish choices... So, the 'Clowns' are a bad idea in such a small tank then? Fair-doo's.. I appreciate the warning. Anyway.. Looks like set-up day will be this coming Saturday now (following a few delays this week)...

    Fishless Cycling

I plan to start-up my FIRST tank this week, which naturally will need cycling. (Fish-less of course). I found this thread to have been one of THE most informative and helpful threads I have read anywhere to this day. THANK YOU. :good:

A Quick Hello From An Excited And Apprehensive 'newbie'

Hi ALL My name is John. I am brand-new to the world of fishkeeping and have very recently decided I would like to give things a go on a relatively small scale to begin with. After lots of reading, web-searching and considering all the factors in starting up with a tropical aquarium I have gone...
