Running a airstone or air curtain will only cause Co2 to be driven out of the water, therefore you will have to constantly inject more Co2 in order to reach the optimum Co2 level. (wasting Co2 and your money)   I would reccomend removing the air curtain, or only running it whilst the lights are off.

I was working at the MOD, (Ministry Of Defence) everything went a bit crazy with people leaving in a hurry and the security on its higest alert.     Stopped to watch what was happening on a plasma screen in one of the recptions, didnt feel like it was real at the time.

  Very True, I have only ever kept these fish in open top tanks and have not had a jumper yet!! They must have a bit of common sense 

Small update just to keep the journal ticking over.    5 days growth since last picture and the HC is spreading faster than I thought it would. The Ammania sp Bonsai is growing at a fair pace. Filter pipes need a good clean which I will do at the weekend. Finally still trying to source more...

Hello,    The LED lighting you have posted a link to will not be sufficient to grow plants under, they would be good enough to light your tank but not to grow plants

  On a low tech set up I like you would just run the bulb till it dies out.

Can you not source some mature media from a local fish store or a friend? if you add this to your new filter it will help kickstart the cycle.   Have a read through this thread, it will explain exactly what you need to do;  ...

The thing is that the human naked eye is not as sensitive as plants are to the strength/power of light, so even if your lighting looks as bright as it did 10-12 months ago the light that is being emmited will be lower than when the bulb was new.   This will make a difference to your plants...

The problem is that Electric Rams are VERY sensitive fish so would not be suitable for a fish in cycle of any kind (even when taking into account the info in the thread you have linked) you may get away with some hardier fish but not EBR.   Just my honest oppinion.

When I was running tubes I would replace every 12 months, on both high and low tech tanks.

I had the same issue,   If you have any PTFE tape? wrap a load round the top and the leak should stop. Also make sure you always put the lid on square and dont pull one side down before the other which can pinch the seal casuing a leak.

Your filter pipes will have a inside diameter of 12mm, and an outside diameter of 16mm.    You will need to order the Hydor heater with the smaller fittings to fit pipes with an inside diameter of 12mm not 16mm that you have quoted

IMO you are feeding him too much, I only ever feed my Betta 3 pellets per day 5 days a week, and now and again feed him bloodworm, brineshrimp or half a boiled pea.    Starve him for a couple of days and see if he looks a little thinner, 2 or 3 days fasting wont do him any harm at all.

The lighting you have will be fine for most plants, however you will find it difficult to grow carpet plants because the light wont be as bright low down in your tank.    I had the same bulbs in this tank; and as you can see the plants grew fine

Like others have said if you want to save some $$$ look for second hand tanks. You can find some very good bargains if you are willing to wait for the right tank to come along.    As always with any second hand tank you want to make sure they hold the water without any leaks before handing over...
