Loss Of Power - Could I Have Lost My Cycle

With the storms on Friday, we lost power for about 72 hours. During this time our 10 gallon tank was down with no filtration, light or heat. I changed 3 gallons of water everyday during the outage and I added a small amount of food in the filter compartment thinking this would give the bacteria...

    Fish Have Ich

I also posted this on the emergency forum, but not getting any answers... It looks like the fish have either ich or velvet and some fin rot. I noticed a couple of white spots on the fish yesterday, so I started treating with Coppersafe last night - Now I am noticing the beginning of fin rot. I...

    Treatment Question

No photos right now. I'm certain that it is ich. Small white spots on the fish and they are scratching on the bottom of the tank.

How To Ensure Plants Are Snail Free

Nope - No snail eating fish, just community fish - mollies, swordtails and a tetra. Had an outbreak of snails before and had a heck of a time getting rid of them. I don't want a repeat of that! I thought I could soak the plants in vinegar and water or something. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

How To Ensure Plants Are Snail Free

I would like to add some plants to my tank and I want to make sure that they are snail free. I know that I saw a post on here about submerging the plants in a solution of water and something else, but I cannot find it now. So, what can I do to ensure that any plants I add to my tank are free of...

    Cleaning Tank Decorations

I tried the lettuce trick - Didn't seem to work too well. We would have one or two small snails on the lettuce, but the bigger ones we would still have to pick out. We wouldn't see any snails in the tank for a couple of weeks, and then all of a sudden 4 or 5 of them. I thought that there was...

    Cleaning Tank Decorations

So, I have had some issues with my tank lately and I decided to take all of the decorations out of the tank and gravel vac underneath them. I decided to do this after an unexplained breakout of popeye and fin rot, maybe dropsy and we lost a molly last night. Well, I took out the decorations and...

    Question About Medicating A Tank

I have a Molly in my tank that has popeye and fin rot. I began medicating him yesterday with Marycen two, but I had to take the carbon filter out of the tank and I do not have a non-carbon filter to replace it with, so I am running without a filter. I mean, my filter is running, but there is no...

    Question About Filters And Bacteria

This is all very good information to know. I will look into a sponge filter or something similar to replace the carbon that I have been using. I have been replacing the carbon filter monthly, assuming that there was enough bacteria in the tank to keep the cycle going. I have also been rinsing...

    Question About Filters And Bacteria

But there is still bacteria in the tank, right? It doesn't all live in the filter? I'm not starting the cycle over when I change the carbon filter, am I? Also, what would be suggested to use instead of carbon and how would I place it in the filter slot? I just buy the 'Rite Size' filters that...

    Question About Filters And Bacteria

Really... NEVER change the filter? I am talking about a carbon filter for a Marineland Penquin 100. It is the only filter that is in the tank. SHould I just continue to rinse it out indefinatly? I will also have some more questions about filters as I will be upgrading my tank soon.

    Question About Filters And Bacteria

So this may be a dumb question, but I read the section on filters and it says never to rinse off a filter in chlorinated water as it will kill the essential bacteria. I'm now rinsing my filter out in the old fish water when I do water changes and I was wondering what happens when I change the...

    Buying A Used Tank

I guess this tank was his brother's - Not sure of the circumstances, but he doesn't know anything about it other than it is 55 gallons. My concern is that it could have been a salt water tank or there could be chemicals, etc. in the tank. Would it be ok to wash the tank with dish soap if I was...
