    Faulty Juwel brace bars

As a side note juwel have been making tanks this way for donkeys years with a lot of success, their quality is quite well known in the trade. I would expect this to be a result of either poor quality materials or a floor in the moulding process. I expect they have remedied these issues...

    Faulty Juwel brace bars

All glass will bow without bracing, but like another poster has said, glass that is bowing is generally under strain and more likely to fracture if struck with something. I have seen aquarists remove brace bars on both the Rio 125 and Rio 180 completely along with the plastic surround. A tank...

    Faulty Juwel brace bars

Juwels customer service is normally spot on, so make sure you dig your heels in and complain. Like they say though the braces are there for aesthetics, I've known many remove them completely with no Ill effects but purely for peace of mind if rather it were there! For a company that is usually...

Do I need to add iron for red plants to supplement Thrive?

Lighting is more important when it comes to trying to grow red plants that are traditionally green. The red pigmentation Is a defence mechanism from the plant when it is under very intense light to try and counteract the effects, it is a response to stress. Naturally the more light you add the...

    Stocking Lido 200

I'd be very careful with African cichlids in a tank of this size, the Lido is more of a cube shape which doesn't lend itself well to cichlid aggression, longer tanks tend to work better. Just ensure you pack it out with stones, rocks and hidey places and choose smaller species which are likely...

    2nd filter options (Juwel 450L / oscars)

Agreed, juwels built in filters are great.

I don't understand some tank prices.

Biorb tanks have always been very expensive, they are impractical and not really suitable for fish, poor filtration and lighting despite their claims and their shape is unsuitable for most fish that appreciate free swimming space. Stick to the class rectangular tanks, can't go wrong! Acrylic...

    Fluval 125 external filter

Fluval external filters are generally quite poor IME except for the FX series. I'd aim for something around the 10x tank volume in terms of litres per hour. Once media and hoses are factored in it's likely to be half what the manufacturer states. I rate Oase filters personally, as well as eheim...

    bad fishkeeping advice

🙄 Bit of a sweeping statement.

    Plant selling UK laws.

Bang them in a bag with some tissue to keep them moist, provided you're not posting outside the UK you'll be fine. Have been doing it for years, licenses are only required for exporting.

Can I keep a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank?

Disagree with the above comment. Just because it happens doesn't make it right. For me no fish should be housed permenantly in any tank smaller than 5 gallons.

40 litre Tropical Community Tank Improvement 2022

Just to add to the super glue comments. Super glue is indeed fish safe but only if it is cyanoacrylate with no additives.

    Nacho

Hey everyone Just wanted to introduce our new kitten, Nacho. Me and my missus have been trying for children for two years, unfortunately for us it most likely is never going to happen, I've always loved cats and managed to bend her ear and persuaded her to get a cat Today we picked up our 8...

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

I seem to recall a similar thing being banded round a decade or so ago, I can't see it ever happening, would just promote a black market for fish keeping.

Whats wrong with my Seachem prime is it supposed to have black spots in it ? I just opened it.

As PP has said, primary ingredient in dechlorinator is sodium thiosulfate, when it breaks down it releases sulfur gas hence the smell or rotten eggs.

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

I've had covid twice, the first time before vaccines were even a thing and I was properly Ill, took me about 6 weeks to get to my pre-covid levels of fitness and lung capacity again, getting up and down a flight of stairs was exhausting for a month or so. I'm just getting over another infection...

    My high school platy tank

Unfortunately plants do not fair well in the cold, freezing plant cells causes them to rupture which ultimately kills the plants. Also plants do not need acclimating.

First water change with fish 😰

Temp drops of 6 degrees (I'm assuming F and not C) will be fine, limit it as best you can but there are slight variations in temperature in a fishes natural habitat caused by rain etc.

First water change with fish 😰

Aye my fish always swim towards the hose too, I normally keep my fingers near the ends to reduce the flow to prevent any accidental fish suckage. It has happened once and fortunately the fish in question survived

    Aquarium background

Personally I prefer no back ground with a neutral wall, either that or plain black. Patterned or textured back grounds are not to my taste. The radiator in one of my earlier set ups really let it down, otherwise the light grey wall would have been perfect.

    Java Fern Questions

Java fern should be secured to rocks or wood, you can either use cyanoacrylate superglue or fishing line. It is generally slow growing but naturally this depends on lighting. The leaves are quite rigid and not easily damaged by snails etc.

Would it be safe to add two more gudgeons?

None of us can be sure, but given these fish came straight from the supplier to the store, then without being given chance to recover from their journey they were transferred again to Rocky's tank. As my previous post stated, stress probably exacerbated a pre-existing disease.

    Smashed thermometer

Modern thermometers contain alcohol, in small concentrations harmless. Mercury is insoluble in water so again harmless. Do not worry 😀

    One peacock gudgeon died...

I can't see the water chemistry in terms of mineral content killing a fish this quickly, acclimation takes a couple of days, sorry to hear about your fish Rocky, but like others have said I believe you've just been unlucky, moving fish is very stressful for them. Stressed fish are more...

    Is a 123l (32.5 gallons) tank fine for a 3rd floor bedroom?

If you lift up your carpet you should be able to see where the floor boards are nailed to the joists. Standard building regs state joists must be spaced 400, 450 or 600mm between centres in the UK. If you can't see any nails you could knock on the wood and listen put for a fuller pitch, this...
