    The elusive algae experience

I've been taking pictures of my planted tank since i set it up so i thought i'd briefly run through the algae problems and redesigning that occured. July 04 Before any beard algae growth, the plants in the tank here have just become established and frequently show signs of growth through...

    Its still a problem

No probs, i've had a fair bit of help from people on here where algae is concerned. It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Keep removing the algae. I do as much mechanical removal as possible when i change my water. When cleaning the glass with my scraper i try to scrape the algae out...

    Its still a problem

I've had algae problems recently - although its not the same sort of algae. I've switched my lighting to 4hours on 4 hours off 4hours on and im not feeding for a week. Give your filter a clean, i now run an internal and external and the water is visibly cleaner and the algae just isnt climbing...

    Bog wood in 40G planted

Hi there, I'm redesigning my tank and have a large piece of bogwood which i would like to use when my new plants arrive next week. Its over a foot long and has previously been in a tank with java moss growing on it. I really dont want algae from the other tank spreading when i move the bog...

    Feeding Otos

I feed mine boiled lettuce every other week or so. They take a while to aclimatise so give them a chance - they wont want to eat if they're stressed so let them settle in for a bit

    George's Journal

Looking good, i might fire up my old external filter after what you said. It used to always slowly get blocked but with the other filter running that might be prevented B) Good luck with it

Thanks for the info, i've just cleaned the filter and most of the plants are gone now. I'll need to start making a list of plants to get in. Im looking for something that will grow to fill the top/mid part of the tankl and i'll need grasses also. Any ideas are welcome! thanks.

    Algae identity

Ok i've commenced the removal of affected plants. gf225 - Do you think i should try and save them via bleaching in a weak solution? or throw them? There wont be many left if i throw all affected plants away  Thanks

    Algae identity

I know the feeling, its pretty depressing. I've realised the situation isnt going to improve without drastic action so im just going to bite the bullet and do what was said previously and bring in some new plants once the situation improves. Its easy to be put off altogether by algae that is so...

    Algae identity

Hi gf225, I'm not sure on the phosphate or nitrate as i dont have the test kits available just now. Your advice sounds good and i love the quality of your plants in your planted tank. The only change that coincides with the algae appearing was when i switched from an external to 2nd hand...

    Algae identity

Hi, my 40 gal has been planted for about a year or so now and was doing great with some massive plant growth. A few months ago i got this algae growing in the tank and my plants have since withered and become rather drab and unspectacular. Its pretty hard to get off. I have a few algae eating...

    Mystery Disease

I haven't posted for several months but have returned to the forums to ask for some more advice on this matter. The cardinal that the post refers to is still alive and has been in my quarantine tank (inhabited by 2 amano shrimp only) for over 3 months. The black patch on his tail remains but...

The smaller one seems to be eating more now, he/she will still hide away more and isnt affraid of the other but just gets a bit annoyed with being pecked and chased around. I will definitely remove the larger one soon and try and fatten up the small one :D

    Velvet on Cory?

No i dont add salt but i've managed to remove the fungus (if thats what it is) and have covered him in stress coat, i know this isnt a medication but i dont think there's much else i can do. Thanks for your help

    Velvet on Cory?

Yeah, doesnt help if i dont know exactly whats wrong with him tho. He's in a very bad way now, dont think he'll recover. I think it could be fungus, he could have got damaged in my powerhead and the fungus may have then grown on the wound  Pic....

    Velvet on Cory?

Hi, I have recently noticed white fibres pertruding from the side of one of my cories. I havent added anything to the tank recently and i cant think where it's come from. Black widows preggers?

Hello, i have 4 black widows in my 39 gal, 3 of which have become extremely round around their stomachs over the last month or so. The 4th one isn't round at all and is slightly smaller. This has lead me to believe that the 3 fatter ones are female and the smaller one is male. Has anybody got...
