Thanks erk628, I will do as you say. The subtance is special for the Bio Orb, I think, it's sort of large irregular shaped bits of ceramic media. I do hoover round the bottom and get out lots of poo etc, but not all of it. The rest of it just kind of swirls around for a few hours and settles...
