Getting Oscar (or two) soon, need advice with Tank

I have two oscars in a 75 gal and one is 12 inches and the other pushing 14 inches. It's dangerous to say that they won't reach 16 inches in a tank - I'm guessing mine might... They are both only 12 months old by the way. I know the tank is supposed to be two small but they are a breeding (ish...

    PH in my oscar tank

Oscars are quite tolerant to a range of pHs as long as that pH stays stable. Both of you leave your pH as it is and you will both be fine. If you start trying to raise or lower the pH is will result in fluctuations which your oscars will not like.

    I am leaving

I am leaving this forum as I do not find it is at all a nice place. I raised a point because I was responsibly researching oscars before I bought them. I was absolutely appalled at some of the abusive responses in the thread and disgusted at the response of the moderator involved - I was...

    Oscar companions?

I was searching this forum for information on Oscars. I have a 75gal tank and plan on getting a pair of juveniles - pushing it a bit but I have a bt of experience behind me... After reading this thread I think my oscars will be extremely well off! This thread is absolutely ridiculous! The...

    life rock

Just for info there is a huge difference between 8 and 9. Each unit on the pH scale is acually 10 times more basic/acidic than the previous one!! So I'd keep a careful eye on it if it fluctuating that much. Ph 8 isn't too high - 8.2 is what you should be aiming for. Best of luck :D

do you make a base for your live rock

Rock should go on the base of the tank never on top of the sand - sand sifting critter and crabs will dig the rocks out and possible cause a rockslide which can break your glass. It is best to have as much rock as possible but it is pointless putting expensive live rock as a base and then...

I can't take pics unfortunately as it died... If it wasn't Ich it was something that looked exactly the same and the fish responded exactly the same - any ideas?

    Anemone feeding

I have bubble anemone who I have been feeding every day with either a king prawn, mussel or cockle. Is this OK or am I feeding it too much/little? When I gave him a whelk he spet it out so I assume if he was "full" he would do the same...

How do you know when an Anemone is dying?

Eek! How is your anemone now? If it does die it will serve it right for killing your fish! Not good for you though... Mine looked a bit worse for wear yesterday morning but about half an hour after the lights came on it went from a shrivelled blob to its usual perky self...

    Diary of my Saltwater setup

Aw cheers David - as you can see though it's not all been good or easy. Have a read of spanairs journal if you want to hear more about a tank a bit bigger. We both started our diaries rougly the same time.

    Diary of my Saltwater setup

My fish originally got Ich about 4 weeks ago after a new addition to the tank. I left them for a few days to see if it was just stress but The ich got worse. I took my fish to my LFS and they treated them for me and they returned fine. Under the bight lights of my aquarium though my box and...

Hint for lost fish or to Catch fish..

That would only work for fish with a labyrinth but even gouramis have gills too. Turning it off to allow the oxygen levels of the water to become depleted is just cruel.

WHen people quote minium tank sizes they are talking about for adults usually - mine was a juvenile not even 1 inch across.

    Diary of my Saltwater setup

My mandarin got Ich from my box fish (who also isnt supposed to be able to get ich - go figure). I know it's Ich because I have seen (and treated) it before in my freshwater tank - besides it disappeared with the copper based medication. On a sad note... My box fish has died! My heater failed...

    Live rock

I have to say they are good. ANd they also don't slate you if you have a view that differs from theirs. I tend to just browse for interesting stuff on here now and post on there. Not saying that this forum is bad - theres just less volume.

    Diary of my Saltwater setup

I have bad news - I have had my first fatality (bar the murder at the start). I have had my mandarin in a treatment tank (1 gal and I have kept everything - A/N/N - below 0 :P ) due to a bit of Ich. Anyway it has beem gone now for a few days so I decided to put him back in the tank. I held a...

    Recomendations

I've spent about £800 setting up my 20 gal (well its 25 gal but allowing for displacemnt I'd say there more like 18-20 left...). A 20 gal is hard work but do-able. If you think there is a possibility you couldn't handle (at least) weekly water changes and daily top ups for evaporation then stay...

I leave them all day without food and feed them in the late evening. I hold a frozen brine shrimp cube in the water and they come to hand feed. With my other hand I net the little blighter.

    Fishless Cycling Help

I'd wait till it get readable as because as it stands you don't kow at what rate it is converting - conversion increases exponentially as your bacterial colonies get larger. When it is readable again add half doses to see what happens - if it "swallows" them then increase your dosage.
