    Sand with aquaclear

I only use pool filter sand in my sand tanks. I have enver had it get sucked up in a filter as long as the intake is about 6-8 inches up from the top of the sand. This sand is the best since it looks so natural and is heavy in the water, so it does not get stirred up easily.

    aquaclear 500 or emperor 400?

So I decided to go ahead and get another large filter. I currently have a magnum 350 running an undergravel as my main filter, and a 170gph powerhead running a marineland biowheel pro 60. On a 90 gal tank with a few medium size fish, do I really need more biowheels that would come on the...

    What O.T.T. filters fit a 90gal?

I am running a magnum 350 with an undergravel setup for one corner, and a 170gph powerhead hooked up to 2 6-7inch biowheels. My water was slightly yellow(color bleed), so I put one of my many extra whisper 3's on it. Cleared it up great. But the whisper 3 does not fit correctly on the tank...

    Heating For a 90 gallon

I have a 250watt submer. heater in my 90gal. It too has NEVER cause my tank to go less than 80*F (my chosen temp). I had it in my old 50gal, transferred it to the 90 and havent looked back. I keep it at a 45* angle right in the middle. Always have and it never fails. The only thing I have...

Can i set up my tank like this?

If you could switch the intake/outlet, that would create better circulation of the water current. Other than that, it looks good to me.

    Emperor 280 Filter Question

As soon as the water stops passing thru them, the tank is getting dirty, or too much brown "goo" builds up.

    LFS - Betta NoNos

I've had neons living in a 29gal with 2 full frown oscars, Betta's live together, a pleco chase and eat goldfish, and a snakehead NOT eat anything but guppies. Most rules of thumb are true, but there are always exceptions. I really like trying to get as many betta's in 1 tank as possible. They...

    Why do you keep fish?

I keep fish for a few reasons, not in any order... 1. I can afford to 2. I can afford larger tanks by having $$$/space for them 3. I like creating a little world to MY liking 4. It relaxes me 5. They are a showpiece in the rooms they are in 6. Not many other family/friends have them 7. I like...

    LFS - Betta NoNos

I keep multiple male betta's in the same tank. But keep this in mind.. 1. is a 90gal tank with LOTS of other fish and PLENTY of plants/rocks/caves. 2. The other tank I am running is a 20gal. But I have 16 female betta's in there also. They keep the males pretty docile since they are so busy...

    OH MY GOD

I have had 4 full grown Bala's. They are HUGE. But mine NEVER ate another fish. I may be wrong, but Bala's are not carnivorous.

    seamonkeys

As a gift for a small kid, sure, get em. But if your concerned with "paying for what you get", check a LFS. Mine sells brine shrimp for $1 a bag, and trust me, you get THOUSANDS. Not sure about every other LFS, but most have them like this.

    Crabs...

Oh yea, I had a large female crab get out of my tank. It scared my wife as it ran across my living room floor, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF MY HOUSE!!! It had to walk over 30ft. and around corners. It was in the tank at 11pm and in my living room at 9 am. The tank is a 40gal high, and the BOTTOM of the...

    Crabs...

Hermit crabs will die. They are not a fishtank crab. They need land, not a total water submersion. Fiddler crabs can live in your tank, but....................... They will find a way out. Either up an airline, the filter tube, the silicone in the corners, anything that sticks into the water...

what filter to get for a 29gal?

I would do the 330 w/biowheel. I now run 2 older 160's on a 29gal(had them laying around, put em to use). While I like aquaclear, I dont use them in some tanks because it can make a more powerful water current. That's ok depending on what type of tank your doing. But you can never go wrong...

    Eclipse 12 problems

At one time, I had about 50 tiger barbs in a 55gal tank. I had a nice variety of the regular ones, green ones, orange, and the purple ones. Just about every variety I could find. It looked really cool and the fish were quite happy and healthy.

    Eclipse 12 problems

I dont usually mess with anything more than PH, chlorine, and temp. But it sounds like the nitrite and nitrate is because your tank is cycling. If it's kind of new, that will happen. Other people can tell you about that better than I can. What works for one person is not always best for...

    Eclipse 12 problems

If what you mean is that the water flows over the top of the blue filter pad, that's normal. Once it is saturated, the water will still flow through the filter, but it will give the appearance of "not working", but it is. I have a few of the 2gal, a 3gal, and the 6 gal systems. This is the way...

    Stop PETsMart in their tracks!

My local Petsmart is sometimes hit and miss for fish. For the most part, the staff that does the fish usually does not know jack squat. Fortunatly, the kinds of fish the petsmart sells I know more than enough. Dry fish goods are good, and other pet supplies are just fine too. But as for the...

    NEW 90gal

I honestly have no idea. I never knew there was more than one till you asked. I have had 1 for about 3 years. It does eat quite well, but is only 5" long. The other one is about 4" long. I dont know there growth rate, or there life expectansy. I bought them at the same LFS when I wanted a...

    NEW 90gal

First off, in another topic, I fixed my homemade stand/tank not being level. It looks and sits just fine now! I only put on 1 magnum 350 canister filter hooked up to an undergravel "section".(I ran 2 on my old 55gal) The back right corner is the only spot being filtered. I'll be using a gravel...

    Building your own stand

I tried turning the stand upside down and putting 2x4's across it and checking it. Still the same thing. So I took my good old trust LASER Level and checked the tank itself on a flat surface. Well HOLY SH**, the tank itself is off just the tiniest bit on the bottom. Come to find out, it's the...

    Building your own stand

The floor is fine. The tank is not sitting on the top of the stand correctly. Whatever the problem, it is either the tank itself, or the top of the stand. At work I ended up finding 1" thick neopreen on a roll. It's 49 " wide and 35feet long, so I cut myself some and brought it home. That will...

    Building your own stand

This is my second homemade stand I just built. BUt I got a problem. More on that later. I used 4x4's as the four corner uprights, then the rest out of 2x4's. I made it very similar to the one I currently have for my 50gal. I have a nice black skirt that goes around it, and I have shelves in the...

    siameese fighting fish (males)

I have 5 zebra danio's in the tank with my Frontosa right now. Plus 2 little skunk loaches. He has never messed with any fish. He has chased some fish when they tried to get into his cave, but he has never eaten or killed a fish in the 6 years I've had him. Ghost shrimp will get jacked pretty...

    siameese fighting fish (males)

I love these guys, and over the years have bought quite a few small 2-5 gal. tnaks just for them.....had 20 running at the same time!!!!! In my experience, my betta's would always harasse the guppies because of the guppies fins. Dont know if the betta thought they were "rivals", but the male...

    Gravel Vs Sand

I have tanks with both, not in the same one of course. :P I use white silica sand which is very nice. Small, lightweight, yet sinks very nice. Makes the tanks really look good with good lighting. In a few other tanks, I use regular Pool Filter sand. It's light brown, very heavy as far as...

    50gal tank fish to a 90gal tank

I cant run both tanks at the same time. The 90 is replacing the 50 and is going in the same spot. I have to switch the tanks and set up the 90 all in the same afternoon.

    50gal tank fish to a 90gal tank

I currently have a 50gal with the fish listed below. It's shown as a 90 since I already have the tank and just finished building the stand. I'm lazy, so I just said 90gal instead of updating the sig later. B) Anywho, I have plenty of 5gal buckets to "store" the fish until it's switched out. I...
