I found if you have cichlids you don't want to go to deep as they will try to dig to a hard bottom. If your sand is to deep the sand will just keep filling up the holes they dig. Maybe about 2 or 3 inches will do.

My cory's sift sand all day long. They will get all the algai out of the sand from doing this. I put some cory's in a sandy bottom with green growing in the sand and a day later it was all clean.

Ours gets flake and blood worms as a treat. some times a little spirlina flake that goes in for the others.

I use white quartz sand that you can get at a hardware store. 6 dollars for 50 pound bag. They love it and dig in it all the time.

I just use our household filter system for my tropic tank. It has a charcoal filter in it that removes most things. I do not use RO, I'm not running a salt water tank just Cichlids.
