    How To Properly Bag Fish?

You fill 2/3 of the bag with water and 1/3 with air. Some pet shops have an air hose to put some air in the bag, if not, then hold the bag completely open once the water and fish are in it, pinch off the top of the bag quickly, not letting too much air out, then spin the bag until the air...

    Getting A New Aquarium Started

He's still medium sized, but I'm having trouble finding a good size tank that I can afford. This 29 gallon was free and it's better than a 10 gallon. I've read on a few aquarium sites that the minimum for a fully grown JD was 30 gallons. Mine just reached 6 inches. He acts happy and healthy, but...

Another "is My Tank Cycled?" Question:

Just a little tip on bettas.... in general, they don't like to have tank mates. Especially if they are showy. Your betta could view it as competition and try to fight it. There are special cases where people could keep their betta with other fish, but from what I've seen and heard from others...

    Fixing Leaky Seals

The way I fixed my 29 gallon is I used a razor blade and removed the old sealant. I got a tube of silicone aquarium sealant and just followed the directions on the tube. Basically, it said to clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, dry it, apply the sealant and press it into the corner. It...

    Getting A New Aquarium Started

So I have this tank that someone gave to me, I think it is a 29 gallon. I have removed the old sealant and applied new silicone sealant a week ago, it holds water now. I got the glass as clean as I think it will get. I think I am ready to start setting it up and cycling it. I am planning on...

    Infusoria Under A Microscope

I have an old microscope that's just sitting around. It's not extremely powerful, but it gets the job done. I'll send it to you if you're interested. I hate seeing it go to waste. Shipping should only be a few dollars.

Petco Discontinues Aquatic Medication (edit + Answer)

There is a petsmart around here that is better than most pet stores I've seen. The employees there know quite a bit about the fish they carry and the fish (other than the bettas) always seem to be in good health. But they do keep their bettas in those horrible little cups on the shelf and I...

    What Is Your Favourite Fish

My favorite fish out of all the once I've had was Rahziel. He was a crown tail betta and he passed away about 6 months ago :( Here is a pic of him: My favorite that I have right now is Apple. He's a JD. I love his colors and his fun personality:

Tips On How To Get Glass Clean

Here's an update on how my tank is cleaning up: The razor blade got the majority of the gunk off, but there were still the light rings around the tank. I used the lemon and a scour and scrubbed as hard as I could. The glass looks pretty good, but I can still see the residual image of the marks...

How Do I Move My Fish?

When I moved from Florida to Louisiana (a 12 hour drive) I had about 5 guppies, 2 plecos, and a jack dempsey to move. In preparation, I bought 20 gallons of water. At some major super markets, you can buy gallon refills for 35 cents or less. I pre treated them with the water treatment to remove...

Petco Discontinues Aquatic Medication (edit + Answer)

My guess, based on what I read online, is that they are banning antibiotics because the water from pet fish tanks ultimately ends up getting into other water sources. And supposedly, it is causing mutations in wild fish.

What Lengths Do You Go To For Your Creatures?!

I spoil my Jack Dempsey. His name is Apple. Anything he wants to eat, he gets. I can't exactly hand feed him unless I want to include human on his menu. I use metal tongs to feed him things from blood worms, earth worms, meal worms, crickets, flies, small lizards, small fish, shrimp, peas...

    From Canister To Sump....

I would think that it would be ok. More water would dilute the amount of ammonia in the water that is produced by the fish and might not be enough to feed the amount of bacteria in the old media. But I believe that if you watch your levels closely and do partial water changes appropriately, the...

Tips On How To Get Glass Clean

I just tried scrubbing hard with a dry sponge for 10 minutes and there is no change in the marks. I tried with a more abrasive sponge and that didn't work either. I'm afraid to try something even more abrasive because I don't want to etch the glass. Isn't there a chemical or something that is...

Tips On How To Get Glass Clean

That is what I was using, and it didn't get it all off. It removed most of the thick parts, but there are still white lines on the glass. The sponge I used had a plastic mesh around it for getting at stubborn spots.

A Couple Of ?'s About Filter Media And Cleaning

Your sponge houses the bacteria that is needed to remove the ammonia. So as long as you have that sponge in there, the floss can be discarded without harming the balance. You wouldn't want to remove them both though because too much of the bacteria would be removed and the ammonia would spike.

New Tank Water Turned Yellow Green

Why did you use old tank water? I think that you should rinse the wood off more thoroughly and use all new water and rinse the gravel off too. Be sure to use a water dechlorinator. If the water still turns colors again, there are chemicals that some fish stores carry that control algae growth...

A Couple Of ?'s About Filter Media And Cleaning

More frequent, smaller water changes are better for keeping the stress level of the fish low. It also depends on the size of your tank. For my 10 gallon tanks, I do 25% water changes weekly. Then, once a month, I do a large water change and clean the gravel. The longer you keep your filter...

Tips On How To Get Glass Clean

Someone gave a 30 gallon glass tank to me and I have been working on getting it refurbished to look like new. Jumped - Please Help

I'm sorry to hear that :( It's too bad fish don't realize that there isn't water outside their tanks. Help Needed! Betta Eye Problem

In my opinion, it's always better to get rid of any ammonia by doing water changes as opposed to adding chemicals to the water. I believe that the less chemicals you use, the better it is for your fish. Of course this doesn't mean to never use chemicals, but the more you can avoid it, the better.

There's Something Wrong With The Water, Dont Know What!

When you try to stabilize it, you should do it gradually so you don't shock your fish. So, 5-10% water changes every day with water that is in your target pH range. If your tap water is the problem, then what I would do is buy bottled water to use for water changes instead of tap water. Still...
