Thanks waterdrop. I was begining to wonder if the high nitrite level would stop the nitrite bacteria from growing. I've also started to notice that about 4 minutes after adding the ammonnia the water goes cloudly and clears up a few hours later.

Thats good news Will. My cycle is now at the stage of processing 4ppm ammonnia in 12 hours, but my nitrites are still off the scale of the test kit.

Will, I syphoned as much water out of the tank as I could. I also got a clean washing up cloth and used that to soak up most of the remaining water. Some water was still left in the tank where the gravel is but this hasn't affected my cycle. I hope I have alerted any other people just starting...
