Thanks Mystil! So do I! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought they were a bit pants. I thought I was going mad for a little while

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

No, they don't just have strong views, strong views is fine! Hostility and rudeness aren't called for. You can adequately get a point across without the need to resort to it, look at Athenas' post. Anyway, I've no wish to fight, thanks for your posts!

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Yeah, I know they need to overstock to keep their profits going. I understand they won't be there for years on end.

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Yeah. to be fair, the was a spectacular selection of fish. There might be adequate filtration, but nobody but the RSPCA know so nobody here can comment on that. But yeah, the tanks are overstocked. Once again, thanks for managing to get your point across without being hostile :P

Thanks for sensible non-hostile replies! :good:

Can I Put This Fish Tank Upstairs?

 It's a really valid topic, MW. Not so much for the people that have smaller tanks upstairs, but definitely for the people that have gargantuan tanks that could cause real damage if something bad happened.

Can I Put This Fish Tank Upstairs?

Yeah, mine's MDF flooring too. I think my house was built in the 70's though. I really don't trust it's weight bearing capacity but it's done alright so far with my fairy elephant husband bouncing about on it!

Can I Put This Fish Tank Upstairs?

I think fishkeeping is one of the more healthy obsessions you could possibly have! I'm not convinced my tiny house can manage the bath at the mo - we had a major leak while changing the plumbing and endedup with water running down the inside of the kitchen windows downstairs  Took a lot...

I'll just agree with you, it seems to be what you want. Thanks for the replies!

There's no need for the attitude, for goodness sakes.

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Ok, perhaps I wasn't being "condemned". That's a bit melodramatic. However, I don't appreciate the condescending tone of one of the posts. It's not good form  In fact there were dead fish, I thought I had mentioned it. The live ones couldn't move and were stopped from getting to the top...

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

It was not based on the evidence of one visit. I'd been there before and the circumstances were not as bad, although not very good. I didn't want to stand in the middle of the shop and get into a shouting match with the manager. It is not "bad form" to go "crying off" to the RSPCA. If in fact...

New Tank - Ideas For Tank Mates?

Ooh, what about some more angels? You may as well get some more and have a little shoal of them going. Your tank is so huge you could do anything you want with it. I'm getting excited for you. Which is fairly sad  Why don't you get a huge shoal of one particular Cory - I have 5 albinos...

1st (ish) Go At Planted - Rio 180

Ok, so the light's alright but I need a pressurised C02 system? Oooh, I see carbon dioxide in my future. I have to work out how to do it on a budget without resorting to 500 bottles of yeast  Thanks guys!

    Emergency

I would leave it 3 days and then give them a small amount of food. I'm glad the fish are perked up!
  18. M

    Monkeywobblers Rio 180

Oooh 10 cardinals would look good! Especially when the plants are grown a bit more. Argh, I wish I had enough room in my house for 50 tanks
  19. M

    Emergency

It might be a good idea to either feed very lightly or not at all. It shouldn't hurt them, I recently went on holiday to Scotland and didn't feed my fish for 4 days and they were fine!

    Emergency

Oh that's a shame, but don't kick yourself, we all make stupid mistakes. You trusted the advice you were given and that's not your fault. People can be nasty and tell you to do more research but you might not think you need to if you've been given trusted advice. I clean my substrate weekly, but...

1st (ish) Go At Planted - Rio 180

Yes I have heard of him! His tanks really are fabulous. You know, I really am leaning towards Glosso. I really, really like it. More than Riccia. And I love the look of Riccia. I don't know if I have enough light to be honest, maybe something a little bit less demanding...

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Aww I'm sure he'll perk up and start showing himself soon!
  23. M

    Monkeywobblers Rio 180

Oooh neons. I do like neons, very much so. I don't know if they would fit or if a larger shoal of H rasbora would look better. Argh decisions, decisions! I have seen 180's with much higher stocking than mine mind you. I might be tempted to go for cichlids next :hyper:

    Emergency

Yeah invaders idea is a good one - make sure the mesh is fairly large or half the muck won't go up. Or just use the hose by itself and wiggle it over the gravel, veeerry gently disturbing it
  25. M

    Emergency

I used to just use the clear plastic tube that came with my gravel vac - do you have a hose pipe?

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

They seem to have so much character! Not that other fish don't of course, but it seems so much more pronounced with Oscars - perhaps because they're so much bigger.

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

By the way shelagh, I adore your oscars. There's one in my LFS nearly fully grown (Red Tiger?) that is all by himself and looks so utterly adorable I just want to hug him. And they have 3inch babies too :hyper: I need a bigger house
  28. M

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Well I think that might be a route to take in the future if I go back and see them grossly overstocked as they were before - but I don't think a small screechy woman shouting at a fish shop manager in the middle of a busy Saturday would've gone down well :hyper:

Best Algae Eater For A Planted Tank?

Well I can't speak for his experience, but mine hasn't really touched the wood - maybe because he's too small - however if he did it'd take a heck of a lot of sucking for him to eat my bogwood :D
  30. M

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

To be honest, I didn't feel like getting into a confrontation in front of a shop full of people, because in all likelihood the manager would've been overly defensive or dismissive and it wouldn't have achieved much. MHA do have a good reputation, but people seem to forget that there are...

    First Pics Of My Tank

Hello! I love the tank. The plants are looking lush! I adore your red and black platy, I have one just like it. She's gorgeous!
  32. M

    Monkeywobblers Rio 180

I wasn't really sure if the tank would take it, or what I would add if I did want more - I like the idea or more H rasbora, or a shoal of neons, but if I were to add anything at this point I think it would have to be another female gourami. How much more do you think would comfortably fit? I...

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

I think I should point out that I'm not criticising the Maidenhead Aquatics brand, the shop in question merely happens to be a MH shop. I would still be posting this if it was a family owned LFS that I had to report. Please don't get annoyed at the fact that it's a MH shop. I'm sure your local...

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

To be honest, the RSPCA didn't sound impressed with them, but I'm not sure they're going to do much about it. As you say helter, you really need to have a background or at least some knowledge of fish to tell if they're being ill-treated. It's not as cut and dry as a puppy being starved or a cat...
  35. M

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Yeah I completely agree. It goes back to the age-old and much discussed topic regarding LFS and their objectives, and the fact that not all of them manage to make money in the most ethical ways possible. However, in the picture advertising the shop, the tanks will be maintained and clean. When I...

Maidenhead Aquatics - Wyevale Garden Centre

Just thought I'd give a quick heads up about the MH Aquatics in Crowland (near Peterborough). I went there the other day with my husband with the intention of buying some new plants and while I was there we took a look at the fish - who goes to a LFS and doesn't look at the fish?! :hey: I...

Best Algae Eater For A Planted Tank?

Hiya! I had a slight problem recently with algae and decided I needed to do something about it too. I didn't see the size of your tank, but mine's a Rio 180 so I can't go for anything big. I decided on a Whiptail Catfish as they don't get too big and they look pretty cool. After about 3 days...

1st (ish) Go At Planted - Rio 180

Hi guys. I've really enjoyed my first go at a planted tank, however I need some advice and inspiration with regards to further plants and a plant for carpeting. So far I have, Java Moss Java Fern 3/4 different types of anubias (not sure about them though) 2 Moss balls Salvinia molesta (I think)...

    Monkeywobblers Rio 180

Aww guys, thanks very much! It's my first attempt at a planted tank - I have an (empty) Rekord 70 that I did have plants in but it wasn't really aquascaped. I've been haunting the planted tank threads to try and get an idea of what kind of carpet I could get eventually. I was thinking about...
