    Ammonia - AMRID

Thanks Jay (and everyone)! I have taken all of your advice (removed amrid filter, added gravel from established tank and I'm doing 10-15% water changes daily) and things are looking good so far. My daughter is enjoying the fish tank tremendously, especially in light of the fact that one of my...

New tank - molly gave birth.

I'm totally new to fishkeeping and aquariums and just set up my tank last Wednesday with 2 mollies, 1 platy, 1 rasbora and 1 danio (died mysteriously -thought these were supposed to be hardy fish). I woke up this morning and my silver molly had given birth last night! There are 3 small fry in...

    Water hard.

Thanks, I'll do that! And I'll keep the info about the cory's in mind--wouldn't want them to get too lonely! :P

    Water hard.

Thanks for all your advice guys! Actually I dissolved the salt in the water change before I added it to the tank--didn't just toss it in. And I don't have any loaches or catfish yet, but will probably get a cory or two after the tank is done cycling. I'm also doing daily water changes for the...

    Water hard.

Oops! Well, I just did a water change and threw some salt in before reading your post. I guess I'll just stop doing that from now on and the water will gradually revert back to its hard state. Or maybe I should buy some bogwood and put it in the tank? I think I read that somewhere else in this...

    Water hard.

Really? It was my understanding that aquarium salt brings hardness levels down. I'm confused now... Karen

    Water hard.

I just tested the levels in my tank and the water is very very hard (425 reading). I have two mollies in the tank and I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) these fish like a softer water. Can I just toss some aquarium salt directly into the tank? Or should I add dissolved salt with the next water...

    Ammonia - AMRID

The tank needs the ammonia to cycle! Of course! Jeez, why didn't that occur to me before? I just removed the amrid filter and will get some gravel from the pet store--thanks for the advice. :) Problem about returning the fish though. My 6-year old daughter has already given them names and...

    Ammonia - AMRID

Thank for the response Jay! When you say "don't overdo the water changes" what exactly do you mean? Last night when the fish were looking so bad, I did a 10% change (as per what I read by Alien Anna in the pinned post for New Tank Syndrome) and the fish didn't seem any happier. So I decided to...

    Ammonia - AMRID

Hi all, Newbie here. I just started a 10 gallon aquarium with an AquaClear mini filter that I loaded with a sponge filter, a carbon filter and an ammonia remover filter (amrid). I set the tank up 3 nights ago and bought 5 fish (2 mollies, a platy, a rasbora and a danio) tonight for the tank as...
