    Stocking Advice

Thanks, I'll try and take some better ones once the fish have settled a little. It's amazing how they shoal immediately though

I've added some photos as requested (tried following the rules since I'm new to this as well).

    Stocking Advice

Thanks. The Plec is going in my outdoor pond when the water temp increases (still frozen!!) I'll keep an eye on the Sparkling Gouramis - Newbie Error! Not sure what to do about the Paradise Fish. It's relatively placid at the moment, in fact it even swims up to and follows...

    Stocking Advice

Thanks for the help. The plec pretty much keeps himself to himself - I have a feeling he was just "sucking the slime" off the lemon tetra that another fish killed. So all in all I seem to have a pretty agressive tank. They all seem to have settled a little over the last few days though. I...

    Stocking Advice

Not sure if I've broken any rule "bumping" this back up to the top but I am concerned about the stocking level in my tank given the two casualties. I haven't had any responses to my plea for advice, despite many people reading the post. Help please :good: James.

    Stocking Advice

OK, so it looks like I have some aggression in my tank. I have found one of the small red danios without a face and now I came across the plec sucking on a lemon tetra with a bite out of his stomach area. Please can someone give me some feedback on my stocking - are they just "settling in"...

    Stocking Advice

Thanks once again for all the great advice. Unfortunately I was a little too quick to act on OldMan47's advice to wait for the tank to mature before adding the Otos. I will pay close attention to the water quality. My stocking is now as follows: 12 x Serpae/Red Minor Tetra 6 x Albino Tiger...

    Stocking Advice

Having read a few more of the posts on here, I've decided against the Gouramis, even though I think some of them are stunning looking fish. They seem to be quite ill-feted and not too "long for the world" and so as a beginner, perhaps I can start off with something else. Any suggestions based...

    Stocking Advice

The cycling has taken about 5 weeks. I wish I had kept more details along the way, such as records of the levels etc., but hindsight is wonderful! I started out by trying to transfer some elements of an existing cylced 10G to the 60G including some plants, the HOB filter and some plants. I...

    Stocking Advice

So after much patience and frustration  it seems my new 60G tank has now completed its fishless cycle. Thanks to everyone on here for their great advice - I am sure it has saved the lives of a few fish. I have spent some time trying to research the fish I like and after some...

    Please Ignore - Double Post

<EDIT> My apologies - somehow this got double posted. I don't know how to delete it!

    Lighting Upgrade

Thanks for the reply. My tank is in the basement also, well away from natural light. What is the wattage rating of the new bulbs you have purchased? The bigger, more powerful bulbs I have seen would take me over the 17W maximum rating of my light fixtures.

    Lighting Upgrade

As my new tank is nearing the end of its cycling process, the reseacrh I have done (nearly all from these forums) leads me to believe that my current lighting set-up is not adequate for any kind of planted tank. I have a 60 US gallon tank (dimensions 48" x 13" x 22") made by Perfecto (I think)...

    60g Stocking Advice For Beginner

Thanks for the advice - it looks like I may have to choose between Mbuna and tropical community then. Mmmm...will be a tough one!

    60g Stocking Advice For Beginner

Wow - thanks for the fast reply. I have checked on the internet and the ones I have seen at my LFS are Pseudotropheus saulosi (or could be Labidochromis caeruleus) and also Placidochromis electra. Would these work?

    60g Stocking Advice For Beginner

After learning some hard Newbie lessons, I have listened hard to the advice of the members on here and have purchased a new 60g tank that is coming to the end of a fishless cycle (I hope!). I have spent some time looking into the types of fish I like, but now have a conundrum. I really like...

    Upgrading From 10gal To 60gal

Now that I have definitely got the bug from starting with a 10gal, I have been contemplating getting a 55gal for some time. In PetSmart today thay had a 60gal plus a contemporary black stand on sale for $229 (normally $329). Well I bought it, got it home and have just got it filled. I am...

    Equipment Advice For Newbie

Having cut my teeth and making all my newbie mistakes on a 10g (fortunately without death to any fish), I've decided to take the plunge and buy a bigger tank. Looking around the LFS there seems to be so much choice that it is all a bit bewildering. I'm considering either a 55g or 75g but would...

Surfactants In Ammonia For Fishless Cycling

Just wanted to add an update. I managed to use this ammonia to complete my fishless cycle with no problems, so for this particular brand, the surfactants don't casue a cycling issue. Since I have to admit to making a newbie mistake here, I did as much of a water change as possible, and made...

    Switching From A 10 Gal. To A 55 Gal.

I'm noew to all this as well, but from what I've read, one of the key steps might be to ensure you transfer some of the media from your existing filter into the new setup once up and running and dechlorinated. This should cut down the cycling time dramtically. Once your new filter is properly...

Surfactants In Ammonia For Fishless Cycling

I thought I was making progress with my fishless cycle until I saw some concern raised about "surfactants" in the ammonia. I didn't see this initially and the ammonia I bought from Walmart contains only ammonium hydroxide and surfactants. It foams when you shake it - BUT - it seems to work!! I...

    Ammonia Meter Accuracy

Thanks again for the advice. :good: I have performed another 25% water change today and cut a small piece of the bio-filter mat out of the riser in the waterfall from my outdoor pond and placed it in the corner of the tank. I have also brought in some small rocks and added these too...

    Ammonia Meter Accuracy

Thanks for the advice. A man from Leeds I see. I am from Doncaster originally before moving out here to the USA last year. I kind of inherited the outdoor pond but it is so nice I quickly decided to try and keep fish in there, starting with some goldfish before moving on to some small and...

    Ammonia Meter Accuracy

I bought a small (2") pleco about 4 months ago to inhabit my outdoor (2,000 gal) pond, mainly for algae cleaning duty but I also think these fish are pretty cool when they reach a good size. With the Michigan winter approaching I managed to catch it, and bring it in to what was my Koi hospital...
