    What's My Light Level

I'm growing them in plain sand although im lightly dosing nutrient into the water column. My anacharis grows like crazy, up to an inch/day sometimes, is it draining all the nutrients from the water?

    What's My Light Level

I know that as tank size increases the watts/gallon rule breaks down. I have a 75 gallon tank with 130 watts of light. Would you consider this medium light or is it still low as its below 2wpg? Without CO2 Im having trouble growing some "medium light" plants like amazon swords, green wendtii...

    Powerhead Burping

Well I cant see bubbles coming off the plants directly so I guess thats not it. There are no air operated ornaments, and no way I can see any bubbles of any type reaching the power head, its also not touching anything just suspended on the back wall. The bubbles are magically coming out of...

    Powerhead Burping

Its still burping. Is it possible that the movement inside the power head is causing excess oxygen from the plants to separate out into bubbles? I can't see any way gas is getting to the power head.

    Powerhead Burping

I have a maxijet 1200 powerhead about 10 inches below the water surface. The venturi tube is NOT attached. About once every 45 seconds or so the powerhead spews out a small burst of bubbles. My question is quite simply, where is the gas coming from? Is the water agitation inside the...

    Green Water Problem

I set it down to 7 hours of light now, should I go even lower? Id really rather keep it low tech. Adding plant mass with more anacharis is an option I guess. Stocking level is extremely low, just a collection of rescue fish (1 small S. eupterus, 2 Zebra danios, 1 botia kubotai, 1 small...

    Green Water Problem

    Green Water Problem

I Have a bad case of green water. About the tank: Photoperiod was 12 hours, then after green water I reduced to 9 hours, now I've reduced it to 8. 164 watts over a 75 gallon tank. Plants are anacharis, amazon sword, giant vallis, wisteria. Lightly planted. 33% water change per week...

    Sae Eating Waste

I'm 100% sure I have 1 true Siamese Algae Eater and 4 Otocinclus Affinis. The Siamese Algae eater is fed mostly flake food, with supplements of freeze dried bloodworm, algae wafer, and shrimp pellets. Once a week I give them zucchini. The Otocinclus eat mostly algae from around the tank...

    Sae Eating Waste

Twice now I've seen my Siamese Algae Eater eat Otocinclus waste, even going so far as to stop eating the piece of zucchini in front of him to go after it. Do I need to be concerned? Does it mean hes deficient in some nutrient? This guy is overfed if anything so I know its not because hes hungry.

    Diatoms

    Anyone?

    Diatoms

Its lightly planted with some slow growing Anubias / crypts but even those are struggling in such low light. Planning to move them to a much higher light tank soon. For all intents its not planted since the plants aren't using a meaningful amount of nutrients. The Otos are always busy they...

    Diatoms

I'm having trouble with diatoms (brown algae). They're growing as a thin, easily removed, brown dusty layer on all the plants/glass/rocks/wood and even on the gravel. A quick wipe of a sponge takes them all off no problem but they grow right back in about a week. I've got 4 Otocinclus in the...

    Growing Plants In Sand Questions

I'm planning to switch to a black sand substrate at the same time I upgrade my lighting to a more reasonable level and had a few questions about growing plants in it. 1. How deep should the substrate be? the same as gravel in a planted tank or a bit thinner? 2. Will sand make the plants less...

    Do Aquarium Seals Decay?

I'm thinking about buying a used 135 gallon glass aquarium. The owner says it has no leaks but that the tank is 12 years old. Do I have to worry about the seals being old/weak and possibly causing a burst or leak or should I not worry about it? As a secondary question will I be able to tip a...

    Reducing Particles In Water?

Nothing like a flimsy excuse for a Jpeg diagram. Where should i place the secondary filter? Also is this a problem that would also be solved by a powerhead and if so how would I place that?

    Reducing Particles In Water?

To clarify once something gets sucked up the filter its done, it just seems like theres always something new floating around on the far side of the tank. Is this where I should put a small internal filter?

    Reducing Particles In Water?

Hi I've got a 29 gallon tank with an Aquaclear 70 (300 gallon/hour) HOB filter. It does a fairly good job of cleaning the tank but there always seems to be a few particles of waste/leaf matter/etc floating around. Is there a way to more reliably remove all floating particulate matter from the...
