By the sounds of it, you have too much pressure. Membranes are only supposed to run at around 70psi maximum. Turning the tap "off" partially will fix that though. It also sounds to me like an incorrect restrictor has been fitted to it. IMO, I'd say the membrane will rupture if ran "as-is"...

Sorry, I can't help but but-in with this much wrong info in an RO unit thread :angry: You cannot fix your current issues with DI alone. It should be clear to anyone that knows anything about RO units that the membrane is knackered. A correctly functioning membrane will produce product water...

Matt, Any media with a good surface area will be fine for Biological filtration. :good: For a return pump, you are looking at one capable of pushing 4-6 times the tank's volume though the display. That means 250lph in the 50l and 175gph in the 25g. Note, this is flow after head-height losses...
