You're right about them being misleading, all the photos I can get on google search seem to have the white patches covering the fish's entire body. But, so far it does sound as if it could be columnaris like you suggested - the poor thing has white stripes on either side of it's back...

So do you think I would be better off just treating the fish that appears ill, or treating them all as a precaution? I can move the snails as long as there is no way that the disease can be spread by them.

Bettas (Siamese Fighters) are probably best to stay away from. Yes, they're personality really does determine whether they are safe community fish or not - but it's best not to test it. :no:

Could be Ich- check thoroughly for white spots. Some also claim "flashing" like that is a sign of electrolyte difficiencies, though I've only ever seen it lead to Ich.

By clownfish do you mean clown loach? The only clown fish I know of are saltwater.
