    white spots on lionshead goldfish

I hear this one all the time. There are two possibilities, both of which are unfortunately little-known facts about fancy goldfish. One, during breeding time (when the water turns colder) the goldfish will develop little bumps, exactly like ich, on his head and gill plates. These should be...

    Cories keep dying

alright, lets look at it this way. You say cories hate even a little salt? prove it. he's my argument: because fish have to maintain a relatively high salt concentration, Increasing outside salt levels slightly reduces osmotic stress. Therefore, a small amount of salt is good. And, for...

    Water Conditioners

Dead leaves anywhere in the tank will cause ammonia and/or nitrite spikes, i had a bad nitrite spike after all my plants died. If it's dying, it's best to yank out the vast majority of it and leave only the healthiest to restart.

    Cories keep dying

No, goldfish are in a 20 gallon all to themselves. The tank in question has only the endlers, the pleco, and the ex-cories. shoulda said "My pleco lives in the same tank just fine, and i keep my goldfish, betta, frogs, and angelfish in the same salt concentration" I don't use it...

    Clown Loaches

They're a schooling fish... I'm not sure if they form a cory-school (a few fish hanging around eachother) or a neon-school. (tight defensive formation) If they make a Cory-school, you need at least 2, much better 4, and above that it'll help some. If they make a neon-school, you need at least 6...

    water changes

Yup. Many. There are all kinds of different bio-chemicals in the water that are only removed by water changes. You also need to replenish some of your kH buffer. Lack of regular water changes can result in OTS: http://www.tomgriffin.com/aquasource/oldta...ksyndrome.shtml

    snail and shrimp

oh ya... snails... pond snails bred rapidly for me. This makes them a usual pest, but im sure you could get some from someone infested wiht them. If mine ever come back after copper treatments, i might be able to send u some.

    snail and shrimp

Everything ive read says that breeding them is just a chance egg-laying or two. Ghosties are cheap, tho, if you can buy a bunch (100 for $10 at my lfs) and store them until they're fed.

    Cories keep dying

1 teaspoon /gallon is not a lot of salt. My pleco lives in the same tank just fine, as well as my goldfish, betta, frogs, and angelfish in the same concentrations. These endlers are like most other livebearers, they like just a little salt... which is what i gave them. Brackish is more on the...

    Cories keep dying

It's because i have some Endler's Livebearers, they come from a semi-brackish lagoon. I was only at 1 teaspoon/gallon, i've known people who kept cories in much higher concentrations.

    Salt Water Dipping

yes, do it tomorrow, and every day. I'd even go up to 3 teaspoons/gallon for 30 minuits, unless they show signs of pain of extreme stress. Especially the guppies, they're almost brackish.

    Zebra danios

actually, most things ive read say they're happy in colder water, too - like 70 degrees. That's non-heater temperature.

    Cories keep dying

I had another thought: could it be calcuim silicate? There's some in the salt i use for my tanks, it's an anti-caking agent.

    Can anyone help please

prefferably, you'd get salt with nothing but NaCl. Just salt. I, however, have used salt with calcium silicate in it without any trouble. Most poeple think idiodine is bad for the fish, some think the levels of iodine are negligible. The thing to REALLY avoid is prussaic acid. It's the "gas" of...

    Bio wheels

I actually dont much care for marineland products. Bio-wheels are all well and good, but the filters they come on are very... i dunno... pushy. I dont beleive in any need for any sort of mechanical or chemical filtration, and all my tanks currently run on this principal. The marineland...

What to do with this Pacu?

You might try covering the tank up, so it cant see out. I did this to my Endler tank with a tablecloth. You just sort of put it over the tank and fold it like you're wrapping a present. Then staple it like that and cut a hole in the top for food and air. Then he might settle into his new home...

    Couple fancy goldfish questions

My 2 lfs' have HUGE orandas for 29.99 (US dollars) But they have a lot of weird specialty stuff. It's odd that none of your local stores have many fancies, we have quite a few. If you're in a very warm climate, they may not be popular cuz they're coldwater.

    Guppys

my pH is 8, when my endlers start breeding i'll tell you the sex ratios. I've no idea what happens, biochemically.

    Tiiiiiiiiny Bubbles

it's normal, i have the Eclipse 2 hood, i always have tiny bubbles everywhere. That filter outlet was really poorly designed.

    Couple fancy goldfish questions

Yep. Very good practice. Naw, not really. They's still sorta snub in it, and thier mouths suck like a vacuum when they open, so they can draw the food out. It's actually good to have a large substrate, in most people's opinion, because goldfish can get gravel stuck in thier throats. I have...

just set up a new aquarium...

that means you have no ammonia or nitrite in the tank... which is kinda to be expected when you have no fish. pH should be close to 7, but i feel it's better to make your fish get used to your normal pH than to try to change it; when you start changing it it gets unstable.

    Shoaling fish

ya, most of the time cories dont really school like other fish... they just like to kno theyre not alone, kinda like goldfish.

    Constipation?

nope, i've no idea what sex. The crazy sob is all better today though. He's always had some trouble with his equilibrium...

    Guppys

Actually, pH can be a factor too. High pH (basic water) usually creates a higher female ratio, while low (acidic) pH usually yeilds more females.

    Constipation?

My large red cap oranda is ailing. He's laying on the gravel, fins clamped, slowly opening and closing his mouth. He can swim, but only along the bottom of the tank like a cory. It doesnt look like he's incapable of getting to the surface, just unwilling to try. I put a tiny amount of food in...

    Bio Wheel topped turning

it's a paddle-wheel that goes over your filter outlet and turns in the current, its made of a sort of pleated fabric. Great for bacterial colonization.

    Bio Wheel topped turning

bloody bio-wheels... what system is it in? if it's in a penguin, odds are the filter pad is clogged. Mine clogged weekly until i took it out and shoved two aquaclear sponges in it. If you see water flowing out over the intake tube, it's surely clogged. Take some water out of the tank and rinse...

    Help with tetra

u mean on top of his gill plate, or in the gills themselves? Ususally cysts like that are bacterially infected somehow. It could be tuberculosis, or some other bacteria i havent heard of. Kanamycin is good for TB, i's put melafix in for anything else. Not sure if they're compatible, if not, go...

    Tetras

It shouldn't be too bright, they should be able to adjust... i think. Anyone else got any ideas? I think the longer cycling time is due to the rinsing of the filter cartridge. How many gallons is the filter rated for?

    Wuh-oh! Heating for my baby...

Does he have a filter? If yes, simply covering the tank will work, the heat from the impeller keeps my betta a 78. If no, you might rig up a little pump (and maybe a sponge filter, while youre at it) to keep him warm. You can make a reeel easy sponge filter with a Discard-A-Filter by Lee's. I...

    Betta Knowledge....

Females build nests sometimes too, and some males will actualy tolerate non-breeding females. All bettas are different... some are crazy. My betta will tolerate froggies, but not livebearers.

how to clean the stones in the tank?

Arent you worried about killing your biofilration? Im not critisizing, just wondering.
  39. S

Can my fish see out of the tank???

He should be able to... my goldfish can see me. He might be depressed, Bettas get that way when theyre moved. also, if you have a strong filter, it might be keeping him cross, so he doesnt feel up to greeting you. (Most bettas hate water current)

    Balloon Molly

The fry will eat brine shrimp, daphnia, and "green water" (http://www.petfish.net/infu.htm) Other ideas are availible here: http://www.petfish.net/fryfoo.htm The female should be preggie again quite quickly, so it'll take about a month. You can probably release the fry after a week or two, as...
