    Best Protein Skimmer?

Thanks guys, I had a budget for $1000 for set up (as I already have the tank etc) and just for the extra 'marine equipment' that is well over $1K not including sand, salt and live stock! The problem is I do not want to buy cheap nasty stuff that either isn't as good or is hard to clean etc...

    Best Protein Skimmer?

What about the AquaC Remora Pro w/ Mag 3? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AquaC-Remora-Pro-w-...1QQcmdZViewItem I am after a hang on skimmer as I will not have a sump at this point in time. It seems to have got good reviews, it seems pretty easy for beginners....what do you guys think?

    Best Protein Skimmer?

OMG Colin...waaaay too advanced for me! LOL. I'm just trying to get my head around how a skimmer works! Once I see it in action I'm sure I'll gain a better understanding. I wish I could make my own, would save me money!!! But for now I think store bought is the only way for me! I will buy...

    Best Protein Skimmer?

OK I've been reading up on Protein Skimmers but I am still unsure on which one is best. I am from Australia and would like something for 300L - 600L tank (for when I upgrade). I want something that isn't too noisy and too high maintenance, and of course something that does a good job! Would...

    Do I Need To Recycle?

Hi, we have had the tank for about 2+ years. We had brackish fish in it, and we saw them grow from babies to large adults and were very sad to see them go, we can only guess it was because my bf tried some new food and left it over night and it caused the spike, they even survived when we moved...

    Do I Need To Recycle?

Hi there, My partner had a HUGE ammonia spike due to uneaten food, and most the fish died and the surviving ones we donated to the LFS, so we have had the tank sitting there for about 2 weeks now still full of water, no fish, no filter running. My question is would he need to recycle the tank...

Thanks Colin!!!! One more question..........do I need a Sump? I have heard about them, and read a little about them (most of it I don't understand). Would I need one for a FOWLR?

    Want 2 Start Fowlr Tank

Hi there, Ok I went to the LFS and he said I need alot of Live Rock, $500 worth actually. I have a 4x2.5x1.5 tank, how much live rock in weight do I need to avoid issues etc in future? He said if I didn't put enough LR I would have ongoing issues...he also said I can't go to any Beaches...

    Want 2 Start Fowlr Tank

Oh thanks Colin! That's a big help. I asked the fish shop if I could just go get my own Sea Water and they said unless I go out in a boat and collect it its not very safe, as like you mentioned might be contaminated with oil etc. Unfortunately I live in an area whereas the beaches aren't...

    Want 2 Start Fowlr Tank

Thanks for the replies! If I were to get live Rock from the beach, is this safe for the tank? Is it the same as going to the shops and getting it? I mean do I just collect it and put it straight in the tank or would I have to do something to it first? Is there any advantage of having more LR...

    Want 2 Start Fowlr Tank

Hi there, After 5 years of keeping FW fish, my bf and I are ready to head into SW territory  I've read books, forums etc etc, but I really like this forum, and the answers I get from it, so I thought I would get a few suggestions/help. We have a 290L tank, any suggestions on...

    Tank Restock & Set Up

Hi all, I currently have a 60L (18G US) tank with Axolotls but I am going to trade them in and I want to start a tropical tank. The tank is fully cycled (as its been running for 3 years) but it currently has an undergravel filter. yes I know they are sort of useless, but back then I bought...

    Prime Detoxifier

Thanks Tolak! Will it stuff up my ammonia readings though? As some of the "lock out" ammonia products out there do.

    Prime Detoxifier

Hi, well i thought my tank was cycled, but according to my LFS it hasn't!! According to my test kits I have slight ammonia and slight nitritate. I did not know that the color in the tube had to exactly match the one on the chart. I mean for ammonia its supposed to be yellow (for 0), my result...

    Question About Ornaments

Yes I've also read numerous times that you MUST not just put any ornament in the tank, ideally it should be one specifically sold for aquaria. They do cost more, and unless you know exactly what that ornament is made from etc I wouldn't take the risk, its better to be safe than sorry

    Ok I'm Like So Confused!

I'm getting a Milk-Spotted Pufferfish and some Scats, and maybe some monos later on, both the puffer and the scats are babies, so I don't need the salinity too high at first, I will continue to raise it over time. Both the Milk spotted puffer and scats prefer high end brackish to marine when...

Can I Add A Baby Dolphin Soooooo Cute!?

Poor fishywishy23! Even if your tank hasn't cycled it is best to return some fish, like everyone said it is a big crowed in there! If your tank hasn't cycled, you are going to experience some major spikes with ammonia (esp. considering the amount of feeding and pooping going on lol), you should...

    Ok I'm Like So Confused!

Because the LFS told me it was a fresh water fish, when I did my research at about 1/4 way through the cycle I realised it was a brackish fish. Then I read that you shouldn't add salt during the cycle or it will most likely kill the bacteria. So I waited and now both my tanks are ready to add...

    Ok I'm Like So Confused!

Hi, I hope someone can help me and I'm sure someone has asked this before, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. My tank 25L tank has cycled, I'm going to use this for a Quarantine tank. I want to start adding marine salt now to make it a Brackish tank. Now I know I can only raise the...

Does Too Much Nitrate Hinder Cycling?

Here are my tank readings for today: Ammonia 0.25 Nitrite 5.0ppm Nitrate 20ppm PH 7.6 My Ammonia has gradually gone down and as you can see my Nitrate has gone down...is this right isn't it supposed to go up? Though I think i read it wrong yesterday when I said it was at 80ppm as I looked...

Does Too Much Nitrate Hinder Cycling?

Thanks Underwurlde :good: I don't like taking direct advice from the LFS so I now always check on forums first! Yes I will definately do a water change once its cycled to lower the nitrate :) Just another quick question, how high is too high for the filters? I mean I would never let my tank...

Does Too Much Nitrate Hinder Cycling?

Bascially what I am asking is, if there is too much nitrate (mine is at 80ppm) should I do a water change during cycling to keep it cycling? If anyone can help that would be great as I do not want to slow down the cycle by doing another water change if its not necessary. thanks.

    Nitrites Still Too High

that still won't cycle it in a day lol...but it was speed up the cycle greatly. how did you go with your water changes dirtydog? did it help?
  36. N

    Nitrites Still Too High

I thought doing water changes slows your cycling process down? I started doing those daily water changes and I noticed that it did slow it down, then I stopped and now its seems to be cycling faster. Most people on forums and a few LFS have told me that it does slow down cycling (even if its...

Does Too Much Nitrate Hinder Cycling?

I just visited my LPS and I told them my situation. Tank is cycling etc, ammonia going down, nitrites rising, haven't tested nitrate. I don't fully get what he was saying as i can't remember it lol, he said if there is TOO much nitrate it can stop the bacteria from converting the nitrite or...

    Problems Getting Ammonia

Yeah wish I knew about this fishless cycling before. I'd rather wait and just let the tank do its thing then have to worry if my fish (even though they are those hardy little ones) are doing ok, they might be "cycling fish" but they are still creatures that have to suffer, so I think all the...

Sudden Ammonia Problem With New Tank

Have you got any fish in there? I'm no expert but IMO your tank is going through a cycle. Whether you intentionally cycle it or not it will cycle on its own accord. My tank is going through the same thing, it is in the cycling process, however it took about 2 weeks for it to get ammonia, I...

Wt? New Tank Cycling Faster Than Old Tank!
