Thread Algae In New Set Up

Thanks for the suggestions. I am following the suggestions laid out in the pinned article and the algae situation has improved a lot over the last couple of days. I have started to dose with ferts again today (half dose) in an attempt to get the NO3 and PO4 up. The plants are still growing...

Thread Algae In New Set Up

I have just planted up a 75gl tank and within a week I've had an outburst of what I think is thread algae - perhaps someone can confirm I have started to mechanically remove the algae either by hand or using a small brush and scraping the glass sides I have cut the light down to a 4-2-4 daily...

    Co2 Reactor Question

After a bit more experimentation, the performance of the reactor is much improved. The build up of gas is now very small and the pH has come down to around 7.0. To achieve this, I've had to route all of the return from my filter through the reactor. It would seem that only by doing this, can I...

    Co2 Reactor Question

I am just setting up and want to stabilise the water chemistry before planting. I have begun adding CO2 (using a pressurised (disposable) bottle and regulator with the Aqua Medic Reactor 500) in order to achieve 25-30ppm. The base water chemistry in my area is not great - pH around 8.5 and KH...

    Filter Return Location

I'm just setting up and wondered if there is any hard opinion on whether the filter inlet and return are better at opposite ends or the same ends of the tank. Those that I have spoken to appear divided on the subject. Anyone got any firm views as to which is best? Also what is the best method of...

    Newbie Set Up

Neal, Thanks for your feedback Neal. I have no high light demanding plants on my list so I'm hoping that this level of lighting should be enough. I intend to purchase my tubes from the www.thelightbulbshop.co.uk. The lamp I was going for can be found at: Osram T5 Lumilux High Output

    Newbie Set Up

Thanks for your reply Fwapp I have to confess that I wasn't planning on carrying out EI dosing. I plan to use a combination of the Tropica Plant Nutrition dry and liquid fertilisers, using their recommended dosage and water change routine. However, now that you've brought the subject to my...

    Newbie Set Up

As a newbie, I have put together a list of tank hardware for what will be a new set up. I would welcome any comments on whether this list looks ok or do I need to have a re-think. (The tank and filter I already have so can't change these). Tank - 48" x 18" (D) x 22" (H) - approx 75 (UK) gallons...

    Hard Water Concerns

Thanks for your replies and your welcome. If the CO2 is going to naturally 'gas off', presumably this will occur in the tank as well. Should I expect to be running the tank at a similar pH of around 8.0 once it is set up? or will the pH value tend to reduce once the aquarium is mature?

    Hard Water Concerns

An excellent forum - plenty of helpful information and people. I am a newbie looking to set up a 75g planted tank in a hard water area. I've had a trail through the threads on this forum but haven't found much on hard water chemistry, so apologies if this had been aired before. Out of my tap...
