    Safe metals for tank

Thanks for all your replies folks! Perhaps I should explain a bit more. I had a rock with Riccia held in place with a hair net and it worked really well - the Riccia grew through it and covered it to make an attractive green ball. It seemed to me that the gap between the rock and the net gave...

    Safe metals for tank

Hi, I want to experiment making hollow shapes out of fine metal mesh in to which I'll put Riccia plants. It may be crazy, but if it works I'll post pics etc. But first, I need some safe material. Copper, stainless steel? anything? Can anyone say what metals are safe for a freshwater tank...

    eliminating phosphate

Hi, Algae problems! Algae is covering my plant leaves and making them unsightly; it shows as a brown looking discolouration especially towards the top of the plants. Some is long thin strands of light green and the glass has to be rubbed clean too. My nitrates are quite low, so the lfs said...

    cardinal tetras keep dying

Just a thought about ammonia in the bag causing the problems. If true - ie that a build up of ammonia occurs in the hour or so from the fish being netted from the lfs tank to getting them into your tank - then how on earth do they survive what must be many times that when being transported half...

    cardinal tetras keep dying

Hi, I sympathise. I bought 10 Cardinals and added to a tank with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, well planted, Ph 7.5. They were floated in the bag and i added little bits of tank water bit by bit then let them go after an hour or so. After 2 days they were all dead. Weird because they settled in...

    Tiny Bubbles

Re: bubbles no longer around. Could it be because the nutrients in the water have 'run out', try adding a plant fertiliser. Or perhaps the rate of CO 2 infusion isn't enough and lack of Co2 is the problem, in which case step up the Co2 rate. HTH

    Algae photosynthesising?

Hello, I have a sizeable piece of bogwood in the centre of my tank. Now, after being in there for 5 weeks a bloom of green algae has established on the top surfaces of the wood (well, I presume it's algae). Once the lights (bright T5 tubes) have been on for an hour or two there are numerous...

    Eheim 2013

I got a second hand 40inch tank with about 30Galls capacity. It came with an old eheim 2013 and it seems to be fine. Just get good quality media to put in it and I should think it'll be every bit as good as a new one. Only problem I had was that one of the rubber 'O' rings on the hose...

    Controlling Nitrate

Hi, All the guides I keep reading say to keep Nitrate levels under control by carrying out water changes. Trouble is, Where I come from the Nitrate level in the tap water is as high as 80ppm. So obviously I'm never going to get Nitrate below that with any amount of water change. In the tank...

    JBL Permanent CO2 indicator

I have a JBL CO2 system to try and provide an optimum plant growing environment. It came with a 'Permanent CO2 indicator'. The indicator is a plastic unit that comes apart to two sections. The top clear half has 5ml of tank water and three drops of a reagent added. Then the black plastic bottom...

    Timers for lighting

Hi, I'm setting up a tank for the first time. I want my fluorescent lights (a twin D&D T5 2*39 watts thing) switched on and off automatically. So I bought a timer plug at my DIY store. Great, except that it says that it isn't suitable for fluorescents. None of the other timers on sale are...
