    H & Ts lost balance

Nitrate: 1ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Ammonia: 0ppm KH 16 degrees pH ~7.4 Temp: 25C Size: 20 US Gallons I got rid of the bacteria with a Maracyn and Maracyn II treatment course. But the balance issues have persisted. The original cause of the sickness is stress due to being moved around in the holidays...

    BLUE ALGAE.........

In theory the plants should survive better under low Phosphate etc. conditions than algae as they can store their nutrients much better than can algae. I might try the darkness for a longer period, take your plants out and bleach them to kill any algae that is growing on them then store the...

    H & Ts lost balance

Hi, Well, I have 4 Head and Tail Light tetras and they recently had an external bacterial problem. It didnt spread to the other fish in the tank, just the HTs. but with that they seem to lose their balance. I dont understand it. The balance thing is still an issue. They almost flip right around...

    Turtle Trouble

I have two red eared sliders and it appears as though they have finally gotten to mating age, i know because I found a rotten egg in the tank. But now the male is constantly trying to amte, and teh female does not want to. She is getting beat up pretty bad. I was wondering if anyone knew if this...

Glow in the dark fish in the U.S.A. yay!

opcn: good points. Yeah, we got lucky. Most of the people in the lab didnt get any glowing E. Coli. But my point was that when you step that up from bacteria to "real" animals those success rates are going to drop. At any rate I saw them today in the LFS and I think they are a bit goofy and too...

    Hybrids

food for thought: on average every person has 6 potentially lethal genes in there genome. This is why inbreeding is bad. All dogs, (domestic) are pretty inbred as the individual types are still the same species, which is really strange when you think about the huge phenotypic variation. But this...

Glow in the dark fish in the U.S.A. yay!

opcn you make a lot of good points. This semester when we cloned "glowinthedark" genes from Vibrio fischeri into E. Coli we had a success rate of about 1/200 000 cells. Now we were shotgun cloning, so the success rate is lower than the process I imagine the used with the glo fish, but still, the...

The ugly face of the fish trade

From the viewpoint of a Molecular Biologist (3rd year student at the University of Guelph), I spent this past semester taking genes froma bioluminescent bacteria and inserting them into E.Coli. It is really easy to do with the proper education. To take something like that a step and make it...

    The worst day EVER.

An update: thanks for all the kind words. I appreciate it. Apparently my brother had used the tank to store drying pottery in for about a year and did not tell me. He is a professional potter. As it turns out something in the process breaks down silicone and well, that doesnt help the glass to...

    Aquarium heaters

Naw Im not too sure where to get them. My LFS used to stock them so I asked when i was in the other day, but he told me that the bulbs were mroe expensive to buy/sell then the actual heaters for MOST models so there was no point (financially at least). I think you would have to contcact the...

    The worst day EVER.

I jsut need to vent, and perhaps someone here will understand my frustration. My day began with 10cm more snow than expected. This meant that my mother would be 5 hours late picking me up from University for the winter break as she got stuck behind snow plows. Since I would not be able to attend...

    please help a dirty turtle

My Red eared sliders ate 3 CAEs, so I would not suggest this unless they have ample SMALL spaces to hide. That being said, I went to a slate bottom and lots and lots of filtration to keep em clean. Good Luck! Pat

    Aquarium heaters

Im sure you can dry it out, and if the glass is not cracked I am sure they can be put back together as you can buy replacement bulbs for most heater types, as far as how you do that, I have no idea. (that was one long run-on sentence).

    Aquarium heaters

You can get the glass bulbs, but unless its a really nice (i.e. expensive) heater I have found that it is cheaper to replace the whole thing. But that may be because I am from a small town and the LFS is the only game in town. :o I have broken many (my turtles like to bite them.. i think its...

Parts for homemade CO2 system (in the UK)?

Not, sure, I don't think it will hurt, but I think it makes it last longer. If it is cold it will take longer to start doing its thing. I use Fleischmann's Traditional Active Dry yeast in a 113g glass jar. They look like little brown beads. Good luck to ya!

Parts for homemade CO2 system (in the UK)?

There are two really important parts to the whole system. One is that the seal between the tubing and the bottle should be good, or you wont get any CO2. The other is a good system by which the CO2 can dissolve in the water. I can't begin to tell you what the best method is, but I found the one...

Parts for homemade CO2 system (in the UK)?

ste2k3- Basically all you need is sugar, water and yeast. The yeast metabolizes the sugar (a carbon based compound) to produce alcohol and C02. I use standard dry activated yeast for baking, but you can use most any kind. Just dissolve about 2 cups sugar in 1 L warm water - then dissolve your...

Parts for homemade CO2 system (in the UK)?

I imagine that will be ok, just trial and error. And on that note I would suggest that if you do not have a check valve in your CO2 line that you make sure the bottle is above the end of the hose that is in the aquarium. When I first started I made that mistake and 10 gallons of water...

    CO2

I'm using mine on a 20gal. It really depends on the efficiency of the transfer of the CO2 into the water. If that is high, you need less CO2 produced. Mine is kinda low as I haven't really rigged up much of a reactor yet, exam time right ow. But I would say that for 120 gallons you will need a...

Parts for homemade CO2 system (in the UK)?

If you have a spare aquarium heater you could set it up in a bucket of water and put your bottle into the water. not the most energy efficient, but it should do the trick, jsut be careful about putting the heater against a plastic bucket....

    CO2

I havent found much of an increas in temp, although the glass bottle likely absorbs any heat produced. A lesson was learned today though. It is really easy to overheat yeast, and they dont like it. I turned the temp up a few notches and it went great for about an hour then everything stopped...

As far as the output increasing x3, mostly observation, but I did try to measure it volumetrically which ended with a wet shirt sleave and a 50ml beaker in the bottom of the tank.

Preparing a plant pot for the tank...

If it is a pot from most stores it should be ok. But if it says it was hand made anywhere in south america or africa and has bright colours the pot is a bad idea. They make those glazes by boiling lead compounds. Really bad idea for anything to eat that.

Can I fit anymore fish in???

I would suggest that 4 clown loaches will definately outgrow a 50gal. IN the short term they will prolly be ok, but I imagine after a while they will be far too big. Just my opinion though.

    Guppy

It may be genetic. A lot of guppies are really really inbred and so they end up a bit deformed, it just may hsow up late in development. It is also possible it is parasites, but I dont know much if anything about that.
  37. P

    Guppy is "S" shaped?

If it is not a parasite it is likely due to inbreeding... if the fish was like that when you got it it could be genetic. In the same sense it is a bad idea for us to mate with our cousins it is true for guppies. Enough inbreeding and they end up with bent back. If it was like that when you got...

Go to a local hardware store and look at the plumbing section. I am sure you will be able to find what you need. Brown film

Most likely Diatoms. They are single celled organisms that many people group together with algae. Under lower light conditions they can outcompete algae for nutrients and so they grow like nuts.. they should wipe off easy.. and if you increase the light they should disappear... but then you get...

    co2 reactors

I usually have CO2 within an hour and a half, although the first bubbles to come out are air because when you change your solution the line will fill with air, after about 2 hours I have CO@ in my tank. I use the standard yeast sugar (dissolved in hot water, then cooled for the yeast) and water...
