The Cutest Fish I Have Ever Seen.

There is a breeder by me that has a Giant Gouramis. They keep it in a 150 gal tank I think. I feel bad for it even though they take good care of it. This fish is just way to large to live in normal home aquaria. I would suggest at the very min. 300gals. Another thing to consider is there...

Trying To Id Fish, Listed As Crazy Fish

That is it Butis Butis. Thank you for your help. Anyone out there keep one of these. It sounds like you can keep them in both fresh and brackish. I wonder how true that is. I hear people say you can keep Green Spotted Puffers in fresh but I don't think thats true.

Buy A Used Or New Tank?

I buy used stuff all the time. In fact if it wasn't for used equiptment I wouldn't get to enjoy the hobby as much as I do. I look for stuff that is about 50% less than the cost of new and In Good condition. Remember to look for scratches and cracks. Don't buy the line that you won't see it...

Trying To Id Fish, Listed As Crazy Fish

I seen a fish in my LFS labeled under Crazy Fish. The fish reminds me of a Hawkfish which is marine. It has the body structure of a longnose hawkfish. It has a shorter nose, for lack of a better term. The fish is mostly olive in color. It acts just like a hawkfish using its pectoral fins...

    A Must Have

I figured I would add a response worth reading. These timers are great I have 2 of these and 3 of the none digital type. I like the digital time because you can accuratly set the time. I'm sure everyone has been frustrated by those dial type timers. I like having mine in a strip like this so...

    Canister Filters

I just set up my 3rd Filstar Rena XP3. I'm using it in as small as a 29gal tank and it works wonders. Easy setup, easy maintence, quiet. I have heard good things about the Fluvals and Eheims also.

    Synodontis Multipunctatus Munch-munch

I normally add some sinking pellets to the mix. I use New Life Spectrum pellets they seem to sink rather quick. I believe those cats are omnivous so you want to use more than algae tabs. You may even want to use shrimp pellets.

I just wanted to thank everyone. I appreciate the quick replies. Hopefully no problems show up in the next few weeks.

    Bristlenose Pleco Dying

On this tank I perform weekly water changes about 25%. I don't have any air stone but I do have 600+ gph with surface agitation. I'm still leaning toward improper acclimation. I may try drip acclimation on the next one. I'm going to wait a few weeks though to see if any other problems arise.

    Bristlenose Pleco Dying

I'm sorry I did add the water parameters. The tank is a 50 us gal breeder. Non-Planted community tank. It is filtered with a lifeguard modular filtration system and a filstar xp3 canister filter. Decorations include plastic and silk plants, a couple rocks, and 2 pieces of driftwood...

    Bristlenose Pleco Dying

Thank you all for your quick responses. I'll try to answer your questions First, no this isn't a planted tank. The only thing I add to my water is stress coat. Altough it could be a parasite of some sort I doubt this one. I puchased both fish from different dealers. The fish looked healthy...

    Bristlenose Pleco Dying

I bought my first Bristtlenose Pleco (BNP) about a week ago he was full grown and appeared healthy in the dealers tank. I bought him and took him home. I would say I floated him for about 30 min and then double his bag water. I only waited about 5 min after that and then I added him to the...

    Ghost Shrimp

Ghost shrimp are pretty active unless there are fish pestering them. I would venture to say they are nocturnal, I beleive most shrimp are. I don't think it matters though you will see them.

    Oldest Fish..

I have someone in my fish club that has a Giant Gourami. It is about the same age as me, I think it is 24 years. Everytime I see it I stare in amazement.

Can You Post Pics Of Your Tanks Plz

I love it. In fact I bought one for my 120gal African cichlid tank as a second filter. I was so happy with it I bought a second one for this new tank. I'm considering purchasing a third one for my 29 gal reef tank. If you have any more questions send me a PM so we don't take this too far off...

    A Couple Of Cycling Questions

I would have to say everything looks to be going fine with your cycle. I would suggest reading the link above if you havn't already but I'm assuming you did. As far as PH goes, ammonia will raise the PH so that is why your PH is higher in one tank. I personally would suggest not altering your...

Can You Post Pics Of Your Tanks Plz

This is my new 50gal breeder. It is going to be a community tank (my first one). I got a little carried away with the filteration. All I have in there now is 6 Synodontis Petricola's. I have some black neons in QT with Ich. The filtration is a Filstar Xp3 and a Lifeguard Modular system...

How Much Do You Spend On Your Fish A Year?

Wow, I'm suprised by everones answers so far. I would say I spend about $2000 U.S. if not more. I would be to afraid to add it up. Well I just set up a new Money program in October of last year. I just to a look at my fish catagory. Since Oct 18 I've spent $1336. Ouch  I do have...

How Often To Have The Filter On?

Although I'm not familiar with the Juwel filter I will lend you my opinion. I have never seen a filter designed to be shut off. The need to be run 24/7. The benificial bacteria in the filter require oxygen to survive. Without the flow of the filter they will quickly use up any oxygen in the...

    Quiet One Pump Problem

I just set up my new Rainbow Lifeguard Modular Filter. I couldn't wait to get it running. Now I can't wait to shut it off. My pump is loud real LOUD. I have the mechanical, chemical, and heater modules. I'm using a quiet one 3000 pump. Anyone have any experience on this?

    Tips For Hiding Heater...

Funny you brought this up. I just assembled my Lifegaurd modular filter. It has a chamber for my heater so I can keep it in the stand. An cheaper alternative in that they now have an inline heater on the market. I havn't heard anything about it yet so I'm not sure how reliable they are...

    Cichlids And Koi?

Well, I don't think it would be a good idea to combine Koi and Cichlids. I do have to disagree with the statement that Cichlids aren't good candidates for ponds. I know a few keepers here in Michigan that use summer ponds for grow out. You get about 2x the growth rate in a pond. Not to...

    Shrimp With Betta?

Just to talk about meds. Copper is highly toxic to inverts including shrimp. They can't handle the slightest amount. Copper will be absorbed by anything that is porus during treatment. I've heard on a few occasions of people losing inverts because they added copper treated rock to a tank...

    Rummy Nose Tetras

Well this tank was just set up yesterday. It is an instant cycle technique that I've used before. I took down a different tank that was filled with about 20 african cichlids. I used the gravel and filter from that tank to set this tank up. I've done this before with no evedince of a cycle...

Upgrading Fish To A Newer, Bigger Tank...

I just finished doing some thing similar today. The best way to start is to buy the same substrate (gravel) as you have in your current tank. If that isn't possible than there is some alternatives as far as cycling. If you can than setup the tank with the new equiptment including new gravel...

Do You Think Setting Up A Fish Tank Is An Expensive Hobby?

It depends on how addicted you get :P You can always set up an inexpensive tank. I would look in classifieds for a used setup. My hobby is expensive because I make it that way. I have many tanks and it takes money and time to take care of them. I don't mind it though I think its worth it.

    Rummy Nose Tetras

Well I got my tank all done today. I went to purchase some fish on my list. The store had some Rummynoses in and they were on the list so I figured I purchase them. First thing out of his mouth is hows your water. I replied good. He said they need water at a temp of 82 to 84 degrees. My...

Do You Have A Quarantine Tank?

Filter, Heater, and Light. It dosn't have to be fancy. For ease of use, I use a filter that uses the same media as my main tank. This way it forms an instant cycle. I just used the established media from the old tank. You can use a simple internal filter though if your budget is tight. You...

    Bottled Spring Water

RO Water would be best. As mentioned above you must add trace elements back to it. "Spring Water" means it comes from a spring and may not be properly filtered. It your willing to spend the extra money it is worth it and is better for your fish. FWIW, I had a friend who lost hundereds of...

    My Pride And Joy

Great looking tank. I am unfortunatly diminishing my tank collection because of time restrictions. It is nice to have at least one tank in every room though. How about a little Bio on the tank. Livestock, Plants, size, additives, ect.

    Drilling Glass

I've done it, it not that hard. This first time is always the worst though. First thing you need is a diamond tipped hole saw. A variable speed drill, some clamps, glass of water and a piece of wood. You use the wood as a template. 1x6 works great, drill a hole slightly bigger that the...

What Went Wrong With My Eheim?

Well, now you have a good reason not to ignore your filter :D All kidding aside, If you aren't changing your media atleast once a month you are being lazy. I'm not saying I havn't done it before. A filter dosn't clean your water, it collects waste. If you aren't removing the waste from the...

    Diy Foam Filter Media

Thank you for all your input. This is the first time using it in a canister filter and I wasn't sure how long it would last. I figure debris would get up into the sponge and wouldn't come out. The manufactur says they are reuseable but I wasn't sure how reuseable they were. I'll take your...

    Diy Foam Filter Media

Alright I'm sure every one has ran into foam as a filter media. I'm getting a canister filter that uses it for mechanical filtration. I have been looking for a cheap bulk version. I sure don't want to pay the inflated price the manufacturer of the filter wants me to pay. I found this sight...

    New Setup, Fish List

This local breeder does have the same water supply. She claims to alter none of her water. So there should be no problems. I found this profile on Planet Catfish. It mentions that the fish breeds in "less than neutral" water conditions. I don't know the validity of this statement. I would...
