    Old reef guy starting freshwater

Welcome! I love the stand! I too am getting back into the hobby for my kid. My son is 13 and we are learning the how to's for a planted aquarium too! Also I am big into woodworking so I really REALLY love your stand! So cool. Anyway I think it is awesome that your daughter comes home from...

So this is what I'm working with...

Hey, the kits came early! So, I have 0 for ammonia and nitrites. Nitrates are present, but not quite at 20 ppm, I'd say it's more inbetween 5 and 10. So IDK what that means. I'll include a picture of the test. pH is high, around 8. And hardness is pretty hard, inbetween 7-15 GPG or 120-250...

So this is what I'm working with...

So I was reading the article linked above on the Plantless cycling... I probably don't want to do that with the snails in there right? Adding ammonia? I think I'll try to do the plant cycling thing. I'm going to have to look into options where to get plants. I'll see what my local store has...

So this is what I'm working with...

I ordered the test kits, and weather depending (the cursed lake effect snow is predicted), they should be here Saturday, so I'll get the readings ASAP

    Retirement of WhistlingBadger

Well I'm glad you'll still be sticking around as a member! Years ago I was a mod on a particular forum. It's much more enjoyable to just be a member IMO!

So this is what I'm working with...

Yeah thanks. I was actually checking out the API kits. I can't center the filter any more than it is. I usually keep airstones or the like running to circulate the water but the dumb air pump was dead when I tired hooking it up. So, that, another purchase I'll be making. I've tried canister...

    Buying plants online

I'm also curious about what might be good sites to order from online, as my local pet store doesn't have a very large selection. I'm also kind of wondering about ordering plants in the cold months? I was advised not to do it on a few sites I was looking at. Boundava, I'd be curious to hear...

    Our Rocco

I love Rocco! I would love to have a parrot like that some day. But for now I am happy with my cockatiel and my silly budgie. The cockatiel is a love bug and likes to snuggle. The budgie doesn't want to have anything to do with me touching him. So jaylach, that's something to consider too...

So this is what I'm working with...

Hey thanks for the replies! So, the substrate...IDK. Like I said I'm a total noob when it comes to planted tanks. So maybe what I chose isn't good. I still have all the sand and could put that back in but from the small amount of research I did do it didn't seem like sand was the best...

So this is what I'm working with...

Hi! I made an intro post https://www.fishforums.net/threads/trying-to-decide.491424/ Since then I did some reading on this part of the forum and I realized I'm a complete noob when it comes to planted aquariums. I didn't even know anything about the Co2 injections. So I'm going to have to...

    Trying to Decide...

Hi! I've had many fish tanks over the years, the most at once was 8, a 150, 125, 75, two 55's and a couple 10's. Mostly I kept cichlids. Oscars, JD's, sevrums, africans. Currently I only have 2 tanks, a 55 and a 10 but the 10 isn't in use. I tried live plants a couple times, but the pleco...
