My new leopard bushfish has some personality to him. He was very shy when I first got him but has slowly warmed up to me. Now he’s learned to come play in front of the glass with the other fish when I walk up, and follow me around. He has knowing-looking eyes like a dog lol.

    What are you doing today?

We could see them all the way down in Georgia! Although I should point out these are long-exposure photos, in person part of the sky just looked like reddish black instead of bluish black.

That’s what I use too! If you spritz the glass with soap water before applying, you can get all the water out with a credit card and have almost no bubbles.

Yes they made it as a joke because Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain, meaning they technically don’t have to ask anyone’s permission to make it

About to get a leopard fish…

At the moment he seems happy enough in the tank, but is very shy. He hides in the little driftwood cave when I watch the tank, but I have seen him out and about a few times when I walked into the room. Hopefully he will become braver as time goes on. If I need to, I might get some stem plants...

About to get a leopard fish…

I will probably eventually need feeder fish, but at this size I watched the ones in the store struggle to eat a bloodworm. 😂

About to get a leopard fish…

We have some in the store right now and I’ve been interested in the species for a while for my SA tank. They get a little big eventually (6”), but from a quick google dive, most people’s fish took a few years to hit even 4”. The ones in the store are less than 2” and can’t eat anything bigger...

🐠 TOTM VOTE NOW - October 2024 Tank of the Month Contest (17 to 30 gallons)

This is my 20 gallon South American tank! I’ve tried to do it in a naturalistic, biotope style. The sticks and leaves are from my own backyard. Inhabitants: Three keyhole cichlids One glow light tetra (remnant from a group) I plan to add some neons soon, and I might try to add another peaceful...

    Keyholes have ich

I wonder if they just had sand on them, but idk why the sand would’ve been stirred up because I hadn’t done anything, this was right when I turned the lights on in the morning Edit:didn’t see your post while typing this @Naughts

    Keyholes have ich

Ok, what the heck? All of my keyholes were covered in what looked like ich this morning, but I just looked in the tank again and there’s not a spot in sight???? All I’ve done so far is raise the temp from 79 to 82

    Keyholes have ich

I lost a couple of the tetras over the past week days but figured it might just be an unhealthy batch. But today I noticed my keyholes all have ich! I’ve been doing regular water changes, but I could never locate the body of one of the missing tetras so I wonder if that was eaten or if it’s...

    What are you doing today?

Lost power for a few minutes last night. Not enough to hurt anything, but it woke me up when the filter came back on and was running dry. My sponge filter seems to be making less bubbles; worried that the water went down the tube and into the pump when power was out since I didn’t install a...

I personally am more partial to the flooded-forest type habitats, but hands-down the weirdest part of these videos is seeing a whole river full of normal aquarium plants. Hundreds of tiger lotus? A bush of Ludwigia? Whole bottom covered in water sprite? Forest of Amazon sword? It’s madness.

Been so fascinated lately watching biotope footage videos of South American fish. I love that kind of biotope tank and it’s so fun that I have one now! Been really interested in figuring out all the different fish that I could potentially keep in it.

    Amazon leaf fish… thoughts? 🤔

I probably won’t get one for this tank. But they’re an interesting thing to keep on the radar

    Amazon leaf fish… thoughts? 🤔

The fact that they don't seem to move much makes me feel like it's not worth it to have a tank with just this species, and the fact that they eat tetras deters me from putting one in the mixed-species tank. Plus, I don't mind having to get feeders every now and then, but 3 0.15 cent feeder...

    Amazon leaf fish… thoughts? 🤔

OK looking at videos of them, they seem slow enough that I wonder if I kept them in a 20 gallon with neons, if the neons could just avoid them. I’d probably lose one every now and then, but if I had regular easier-to-catch feeder minnows for the leaffish maybe he’d leave the tetras alone

    Amazon leaf fish… thoughts? 🤔

I’ve been getting kinda bored with my community tank lately. I had fun designing the aquascape for sure, but the actual fish in it don’t feel that interesting to me in comparison to the SA stuff, and I’d be more interested in another biotope tank than mixed community. So theoretically, I might...

    Amazon leaf fish… thoughts? 🤔

Just recently looked into Amazon leaffish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus) since we have some in the store and they sound like something I might need to get in the future… I’ve been really itching for a predatory fish that is the right size for a 20 gallon, and here is one! They’re 3-inch ambush...

    What are you doing today?

Keyholes are here! They got their first feeding this morning. It’s so strange to have a fish with some intelligence to it. They are still getting used to their new life—they get spooked every time I approach the tank to watch them. They also push around the leaves like puppies. One of them has...

Also “panda tetras” which I had never seen before. They look related to pristella but not quite same same. I like them.

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

They are very peaceful with fish they don't think they can eat.
  38. JackGulley

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

They seem to be oddly selective about it. They knew exactly what it meant when those rosy red minnows entered the tank, but we also had some very young chocolate cichlids that were smaller than the feeders, and they watched those the same way they watch everything else but never seemed to be...
