    Tilapia Ponds - Over Population

Yeah, but these are being raise as food, not as ornamentals. The idea is to get them up to size as quickly as possible. Feeding less will postpone that, and result in smaller yields. I don't believe that to be a true statement. Here is a quote from an article posted to Langston Universities...

    Tilapia Ponds - Floating Food?

Thank you. But this is an 'alternative'. It is a way to feed the fish, sure, but does not answer the question that I was asking regarding pelletizing for floating feed, or presentation of pelletized feed so that the fish will take before sinking. Did you watch the embedded video to on...

    Tilapia Ponds - Floating Food?

That was my intention from the beginning. The plan was to harvest plants from the ponds to supplementally feed the chicken. I had two ponds, and introduced the fish to pond #2 after Water Hyacinth had mostly taken it over. Chickens loved the plants, but it didn't last long. It's been a few...

    Tilapia Ponds - Over Population

I have considered a 'lift net' similar to pictured below, but would prefer a solution other than manual separation. That said, I was planning on doing that for the purposes of animal protein in the chicken and fish feed.

    Tilapia Ponds - Floating Food?

A little background. I'm raising Tilapia in two 5x15m open air ponds. and it is beginning to get expensive buying fish food. The population is growing and so are the sizes of the fish. I have invested in a pelletizing machines for animal feed, (chicken, goat, etc.), and would like to be able...

    Tilapia Ponds - Over Population

A little background. I'm in Thailand, so it's warm all the time. Temps is not an issue. I'm raising Tilapia in two 5x15m open air ponds, not any kind of hydroponic situation. Well water is being pumped into both ponds during daylight hours. Solar, so no additional costs for water or...

    Q: Fish/Killifish Identification

Sorry. I've been away from the forums for a while. Life got in the way, what can I say. Thought I'd catch-up the group on what I found on these unknowns. First, I did manage to get the minnow trap and did trap a few for closer examination. I trapped daily for 1 week and found the following...

    Q: Fish/Killifish Identification

No. She has Ponds. The neighbor raises Tilapia and Frogs for sale. She uses Duckweed, Water Hyacinth, and Water Lettuce to improve her water quality. When her pond gets over 90% covered she will harvest and usually mulches her garden. She heard I needed some and gave me a bushel basket of each...

    Q: Fish/Killifish Identification

First, a little background. I have a new tilapia pond. Dug April 10, 2023. Released 8 Pladdies from my Pot Pond to keep mosquitos down on May 15, 2023. Multiple failed attempts to get duckweed started. Stocked with Tilapia fingerlings July 14, 2023. Over the last few days I have noticed several...

    Q: Will Tilapia Eat Tadpoles?

Yeah... Water change is not going to happen for a while. I could drain easily enough, but ponds fill artisanally at the moment. (Sore point between the Wife and I, don't ask) ...and IF I do eventually end up having to take the tadpoles out of the pond, it is because they have risen from a...

    Q: Will Tilapia Eat Tadpoles?

I can only check pH, and Ammonia at the moment. All other supplies are still in the moving boxes. I had nothing to do with packing, so don't have a clue which box they could be in, and no way to unpack until we finish the house. pH is 6.54, and Ammonia is registering as 0. Not blaming, just...

    Q: Will Tilapia Eat Tadpoles?

Before I could hit send on the above, I found several dead fingerlings. If the spawn I'm seeing is the Common Indian Toad as suggested here and by my wife, and the adult has toxins in their parotid glands as per the article linked, then how dangerous are the tadpoles to the fish if eaten? -sterling

    Q: Will Tilapia Eat Tadpoles?

Yeah, not sure what these are. We have so many, large, and small. Wife says it is Toad, not Frog. To be frank, this site says we only have one 'toad' in Thailand (Common Indian Toad), but I can't tell the difference on some of these listed, and certainly can't based on the tadpole...

    Q: Will Tilapia Eat Tadpoles?

I'm guessing tadpoles don't taste very good. Woke yesterday to hundreds, maybe even thousands of tadpoles in my ponds. I stood on the bank watching for quite a while, hoping to see some of the Tilapia or the one rogue catfish take a few. No luck. Might be a mouthful as yesterday they were...

    Invader in the Tilapia Pond

Yes. Milky color is common for new ponds in the area. It is ugly, and it may affect the flavor, but I'm not overly concerned with my health. I've been reading online as to possible reasons why the water is milky white. Based on what I've read, and my observations, it is milky due to runoff and...

    Invader in the Tilapia Pond

Taking forever for the Cast Net. Ordered, but advised it will not arrive until 8/14. Two weeks from today. :( Did not see the catfish when feeding this morning. Usually he's at the top, 'nom', 'nom', 'noming' his way through the feed. I wasn't able to feed last evening because the rain...

    Invader in the Tilapia Pond

I've been wanting a Catfish pond for a while. One Tilapia, the other Catfish, side-by-side. I'm a good 'ol country boy and love me some fried Catfish. But if they hop ponds as well as they appear to, I may have to re-think things. Nearest pond to me is over a kilometer away. -sterling

    Invader in the Tilapia Pond

Thanks. Apparently, this is an issue here. Been doing a bit of research since posting. No clear pics, and only very brief glimpses in the milky water during feeding. Fish appearance is like "Hemibagrus wyckioides - Asian Redtail Catfish". The Thai name Pla Kot Haang Daeng translates...

    Invader in the Tilapia Pond

I think a catfish has snuck into the Tilapia Pond. Possibly with the fingerlings, but there is a 'walking' catfish here. that 'could' have snuck in anytime in the last few months. I can't see it too clearly, but based on the mouth and barbels, during feeding, I would guess it to be about twice...

    Water Lettuce as Animal Feed

I posted a vid I took on my visit to a river recently to YouTube. It's of Water Hyacinth, not Pistia, but like you mention, shows exactly how differently a plant can grow depending on the environment. It's of one single massive floating mat of Hyacinth. When they (the locals) do anything at...

    Duckweed/Azolla Floating Rafts.

Not only is it common, it is a nuisance. (see pic of local river) Conflicting web information shows that Water Hyacinth, and Water Lettuce are both used as fodder for, and are toxic to, goats. Calcium Oxalate crystals in the leaves causing mouth sores and kidney damage. Some information...

    Water Lettuce as Animal Feed

My Wife's friend has heard of my desire for floating water plants to keep my pond clear, and to be used as animal feed. She has several ponds and raises fish and frogs for sale. Her ponds are covered with a water plant that here in Thailand is referred to as 'Bee Flower' or 'Dok Jok'. I call...

    Duckweed/Azolla Floating Rafts.

I will look into it more. It appears that it 'can' be used in animal feeds. My goats should be able to take it, as-is. However, I expect I would need to process in some way to feed to the chickens and fish. I'll keep this one in mind if I can't get a solution to the floating rafts. -sterling

    Duckweed/Azolla Floating Rafts.

Ponds were dug mid April, so, three months? What would be the recommended wait time? Also, not mentioned in this post, but I discovered the wife has been using the ponds as a midden, (dump for kitchen scraps) for about a month, now. I expect there should be plenty of nutrients. No 'green...
