    Shrimp behaviour

Those look like Amano shrimp. The momma will carry the eggs until they hatch but the babies will not survive. They are hard to breed because the babies need brackish water to survive.

    Do fishes really live long?

if all the fish get skinny and die, you might have TB in the tank.

    Best fish for beginners?

I suggest a bristlenose pleco and platys for hard-ish water. Maybe some Amano shrimp as well.

Evaporating Water - Is it fine to add more?

When I do top offs (which I usually don't do except occasionally in the summer), I use distilled water.

Java Moss - detrius, excess food trap

I have Christmas moss. I keep it thinned and I blast it with a turkey baster before water changes. That keeps the mess to a minimum. It looks like a mess right after the water change but half a day later, all is good. Actually my shrimp keep it cleaned up too.

    Java ferns

I had problems until I added extra potassium in addition to flourish (now thrive instead of flourish).

    Building a routine

I do everything the same but I only do about 20-25% water changes weekly.

Pictures of your bow-front aquarium please? Especially the Juwel 180

Here's mine. I like the bowfront myself. It magnifies the fish.

Have they discovered where bacteria magically appear from yet?

You don't have a sterile aquarium. Bacteria is everywhere, you are just waiting for them to multiply to sufficient numbers. Every time you touch anything, feed fish, put plants and decor in, add subtrate and water, have air circulating, you are adding bacteria.

    Cherry Shrimp and Guppies

I have shrimp with all kinds of fish. They do okay although the babies will sometimes disappear. Enough survive so the population keeps growing anyway if you have enough mosses and subwassertang to hide them

    Softening my stance on snails

They don't seem to damage any leaves. I occasionally see some red root floaters missing parts of leaves but I don't really know what does it.

    Softening my stance on snails

I stick with nerites and shrimp so I don't have to worry about having too many.

Amano shrimp on back of larger amano

An Amano is an Amano even if a different color and males are smaller than females.

    Daylight saving time

I actually just read something. We had to go through Congress because we were trying to do year-round DST. Our state legislature is now trying to go year-round standard time which we can apparently do without Congress.

    Daylight saving time

In Washington State, we voted to stay on DST all year long but it has to be approved in the US Congress which has shelved it for about 5 years now. :(

What are good peaceful nano fish to keep with platys?

I have a dwarf gourami, bristlenose pleco, and ember tetras with my platys (2 different tanks)

Dog question 9with a sad start)

I love Goldens but as I lost one to cancer a few years ago, I would not go back to them. The cancer rates are just too high. I like Labs also but when they are young, they are too hyper. My tastes run to more medium sizes now. Heelers are good. Never had one but I would like a Shiba Inu...

    Biorb

I had one and hated it. Difficult to clean and I killed fish in it. I finally gave it away with a warning about my troubles with it.

    Keeping anacharis down?

I should add, although I have never seen it, it is possible my bristlenose is uprooting it.
  22. BrianK

    Keeping anacharis down?

Anyone have suggestions? I've used ceramic plant weights and metal weights. I've even tried holding them down with rocks. They all only work temporarily. The metal weights seem to work best but if I put them on tight enough to keep the plant down, it makes the stem melt and it eventually...

    Real kit starter need

A water test kit would be good. Something to de-chlorinate if your water is chlorinated. Plants. That kit doesn't look very good. The filter seems weak for that tank.

pH in water is super high help needed

My tap is high also and I mix tap and distilled water for water changes. I do about 10% distilled. That combined with mopani wood and plants gets it from about 7.8 down to about 7.2

Can anubius be propagated through leaves alone?

I don't think it will grow without at least a little bit of the rhizome.

    Bioload Question

I don't even count my shrimp into my stocking levels.
  27. BrianK

Does this look like a healthy tank?

Might be good to elevate the light if possible. I don't think the floaters at the sides will get enough light. Looks a bit dark towards the edges. Personal preference but I trim the roots on my lettuce because I don't like it going all the way to the bottom.

Have You Tried Dwarf Water Lettuce?

I have dwarf lettuce and red root floaters in several tanks. I am tossing about half of both every week because it grows so fast. Must be doing a good job in the tanks as the nitrates and nitrites always come out zero even with the fertilizer.

    Shrimp in filter

Thanks! That is exactly what I was wondering but I have never seen them do that. Now I will have to figure out a way to stop them. Mine seem to be climbing up there to have babies in a safer place.

    Shrimp in filter

26 gallon bowfront. I don't want to change the filter. I was really most curious if shrimp could go against the flow into the filter?

    Shrimp in filter

I have a community tank with fish and RCS. The shrimp keep making it into the HOB filter even though I have the filter intake covered in foam. It's not a huge deal but it is getting annoying removing them and putting them back in the tank. Plus they are breeding in the filter. Every couple...

    Tubiflex worms

I have come to the conclusion that tubiflex worms are amazing. I feed my fish freeze dried tubiflex worms 1-2 times per week but I have found live tubiflex worms in one of my tanks. This kind of astounds me that these worms can survive being freeze dried (and being stored dry for probably a...

    anyone mix their floaters???

I've had red root and lettuce together. I kept them thinned out. I think the lettuce would have smothered the red root otherwise.
  38. BrianK

    Question about freshwater shrimp

The reddish ones are definitely not Amanos or Ghost. They appear to be Red Cherry Shrimp. Must have hitchhiked in on a plant or something.
