Starting my first 125g with some questions!

I’ve definitely deviated in stocking choices from when I started out but as for filtration I’m planning on adding one more filter in some capacity, although I’m not sure exactly what kind I’ll add on. I’m very satisfied with how the tank is running currently and don’t mind a slow burn when it...

I have to go by there anyway this week lol. I bought lots from them at the Canadian expo a couple weeks ago and they told me to come by to have a look at some tetras I was looking for.

Is this normal for a cory cat

If you see this repeated activity throughout the other fish it’s a telltale sign that oxygen is the problem. I would focus on getting aeration in your current tank rather than switching them simply because if you have a problem in aeration in this tank, then without me seeing either of your...

Is this normal for a cory cat

If you find your fish are gasping for air then you should add aeration as soon as possible. This could be in the form of a sponge filter or an air stone but when a fish is gasping at the surface it means the oxygen content of your water is too low, (usually caused by little or no surface...

    Anyone have Asian based aquascapes?

Curious if anyone has any biotope aquarium or Asian themed tanks out there? I’m looking for anything that’s SE Asian based whether community tanks or biotope setups. I’m looking to setup up a 35 gallon and would love some inspiration!

Starting my first 125g with some questions!

Update on the 125: When I last posted here I hadn’t even finished the stand for the tank but it is now not only cycled with fish but thriving! I was able to pick up some cycled media from a great LFS and some stability to kickstart the process. Although still a work of progress I have a great...

Starting my first 125g with some questions!

Thanks for the insight! The tank looks great! I still have lots to research in terms of CO2 and if I will even deem it necessary once I’ve gotten the tank up and going, seeing as the geos are diggers I might opt for hardier larger plants, such as swords and vallisneria for the floor, maybe...

Starting my first 125g with some questions!

Thanks for the advice on the geophagus! I have no shortage of LFS around me and I will look to see what the local supply of geophagus is like and what species we have. Maybe someone could recommend some names of smaller species that would play well with their potential tank mates. I’ve...

Starting my first 125g with some questions!

The tank I have now in a 72x18x21. I know my city water ranges in the middle for hardness with: Ph of 7.2-7.4 Gh of 150-180 Kh of 80 I have had lots of success keeping South American fish previously and have had lots of success in lowering my ph naturally using woods and organic matters to get...

Starting my first 125g with some questions!

Hi all, I’ve just recently built an 8ft long stand to house a 75 gallon I recently picked up, so naturally with all that extra room, I upgraded to a 125g for the first time! Because this is my first build at this size I really want to do this right and make this my main aquarium. I’m planning...

    Blue Fish?

One of my favourite blue fish are the Apistogramma Borelli. Although not always fully blue they have a super cool pop of blue in their face and make for a great centrepiece fish!

    Entire aquarium dead

Great to see some recommendations in the gta! I was at tails and scales last week for the first time and it was an awesome store but haven’t been to shrimp fever yet and have wanted to check them out. My personal favourite is planted aquaria in Oakville but I’ll have to check out shrimpfever

    Entire aquarium dead

Wow I had no idea about the water lettuce because I’ve always seen it advertised as it’s own species. Thanks for letting me know! For the meantime I’m cleaning out the tank and moving some plants to a new area until I can set them up properly again. I will most likely get the same colour again...

Thank you all for the help, it gives me a lot to think about. I’ll have to do some troubleshooting and I will try and make some improvements and give it another crack

    Entire aquarium dead

Thank you for the kind words :).Right now the tank is heavily stocked with plants. I’ve got a mix of duckweed and dwarf water lettuce on top and too many others to name over the wood and in the substrate. Basically what ended up happening is that I used half of a new bag I had lying around and...

Ok again thank you very much! The only thing left for me to know is if the filter needs to be changed out or the media inside

    Entire aquarium dead

Thanks very much for the insight. Im just surprised the stratum was able to release enough bacteria in a couple days to kill the fish. I just want to put it out there that the sand has been capping the stratum the entire time I’ve had it and just making sure the bacteria is still likely the cause.

I also got the the driftwood from a dedicated aquarium store. I believe it’s manzanita.

After doing a little research I found that used Fluval stratum retains gas and the dead areas that you mentioned so I’d have to think it had to do with that. With that being said what would the course of action be? Maybe do large water changes?

    Entire aquarium dead

I ended up scaping a new, larger tank for some fish last Wednesday and then left town for the weekend on Friday. I came back today to everything i transferred into the new tank dead. I ended up transferring some substrate (Fluval stratum and sand), plants and my filter. I also added lots of new...

    20 gallon long planting

    20 gallon long planting

This is what I’ve come out with so far. I’ve put a large piece of Anubias barteri in the back corner and glued on buce and Anubias nana petite along the wood. I have some sort of hygrophila that looks like a fern too but I can’t remember the name and then I have a lily pad sort of plant in the...

    20 gallon long planting

I’ve used micro swords in my low tech 5 gallon betta tank and although I love the plant, without co2 I find it extremely slow growing. I’ve had it set up since January and it has grown nicely but it just barely has spread. Bacopa is great idea and I think it’d look awesome in the back. I took...

    20 gallon long planting

This was the tank as of last week. The wood is currently soaking so it will sink once I fill it with water and so I can release some tannins from it.

Hi, I’m in the process of scaping a new 20 gallon long. This will be my third planted tank and on this one I want to experiment with a couple new things🙂 So far I have Fluval stratum capped with fine gravel and a long piece of wood that goes throughout the tank to build off of. I’m using a...

    Chili rasboras eggs

Hi all, I’m coming back to this thread to post an update on what I ended up doing for the tank. I’m currently stocked with 11 chili rasboras and cherry shrimp with plans on getting a couple more chilis and thoughts on another small species. I was looking at the chilis and noticed that some of...
