And heater placement, I have a eheim themo control. Does the very top bit stay out of the water and is it best to put it vertical as is states in instructions or on an angle?

Thanks, yes I know about cleaning in old tank water ( then using to water plants!) 1 last question, where is the best place to locate the filter? On the short side of the tank so the outlet goes down the length of the tank? And do I put the heater near the filter?

Thank you so much for your advice, 1 last question, I need to get a filter for my tank, being that the fish I'm looking at getting need a slow flow filter and I have a 180ltr tank is there 1 you recommend. I'm more at ease with an internal with the flooring my tank is on.

Thank you, at the moment I have plattys, harlaquins and neons, will be getting corrydoras, a bristlenose and possibly something like rainbows or angels after some more research.

To be honest it's all a bit of a mine field to me! I assume an external is better but more expensive? I will have a look up on ebay and read up on some of the filter user guides as well.
