    Girlfriend For My Male Lobster

it depends on the type of crayfish i guess. i have 4 cherax quads (2 males and 2 females) in the same tank a 300l 1.2m setup. lots of hiding places, driftwood and fake plants and the only time they get agressive is when they are fed. so far they are happy to live together no missing appendiges...

    Fire Eel

thats great Cane76. i wish we had live river shrimp in south africa. here if you want to feed your fish live foods like that you have to breed or find it yourself. not that we have natural river shrimp but it would have been nice to add that to the food my eels eat.

    Eel Identification

the whole family is called spiny eel, whether it's a fire, tyre track, zebra, zig zag, half banded, peacock all from the Mastacembelids group are commonly referred to as spiny eels. that is most common mistake lfs's make. Spiny refers to the whole group and not just one particular fish, and yes...

    Eel Identification

and in SA they are commonly called zebra spiny eels. edit: pictures added here is my zebra spiny. He is fully grown and about 20cm long. and my juvinle tyre track (rescued from a LFS where he shard a tank with malawi cichilds)

    Eels

firstly make sure that you in fact have a tyre track, because they are quite often id wrong. The peackok spiny's are pretty cool, and also the zebra spiny / half banded spiny stays quite small. as far as tank size is concerned stick top the normal stocking rules and you should be ok.

    Earth Worms

@cane76 i just dig them up give them a good rinse under the tap and hold them between my fingers in the tank. they cannot resist it.

    The Right Fish

@wilbo: if you really want to keep a eel rather get a peacock or a zebra spiny eel they stay quite small. about 20cm max. the fire eel will get to big and as they grow they lose that brilliant red and orange couloration. here is a pic of my fire eel. as you can see from the pic all the...

    Mixing Eels

i love all eels equally, however experience taught me that tyre tracks are the bad boys of the spiny eel family. when you buy another eel and add it to a tank with a tyre track the tyre track will "bully" the other eel, especially if the newcomer is smaller that the tyre track. tyre tracks...

    Eels

fire eels are quite friendly so you can pretty much keep most eels with them, however i would steer clear of tyre tracks because they can be quite nasty. tyre track eels are mostly very teritorial and as they grow become more and more grumpy. they also like to snack on some of the other fish...

    Tyre Track

well it depends. if the tyre track is in the tank and have already established a teritory it will hassle any other eel it finds. i had a 45cm tyre track and the 55cm fire eel for a good couple of years (bought both on the same day at about 10cm) and they lived happily together until i removed...
  13. J

    Tyre Track

no way the tyre track even though it's only about 20cm is way too territorial. i have the fire eel and the zebra spiny in a 1.5 meter 550 liter tank and the tyre track in a 1.2 meter 300 liter tank. i am busy growing out the tyre track to sell. another 3 months and i'll be able to sell him, he...

    Tyre Track

dont worry. all my eels (tyre track, fire eel, zebra spiny) do it. my 55cm fire eel lies ontop of a huge airstone all the time. i reckon it's like a eel jacuzzi.

Two Sugars And Semi Skimmed Milk

i had an article somewhere that details this. it is not only possible but quite safe. to my knowledge some of the fishkeepers here add it to their New world cichild setups with good results. so in short yes it can be done. edit: found a bit more info it seems that ceylon tea is ok to use and...

    Fire Eel

chris i keep loads of eels. the fire eels are by far my fav. they do grow quite big and quite quickly. my biggest one is about 55cm at the moment, he lives in a 1.5 meter 550 liter tank and will be moved to a 2.5 meter setup in a couple of weeks. they are wonderfull fish to keep and do well in...

    Fire Eel

i feed mine bloodworms while they are young (hikari) then as they grow they get earthworms and when they get to the stage where i cannot stay ahead with earthworms i move them on to ox liver. my fire eel eats about 200 to 250 grams of liver per month. i know it is a lot but he is a big boy and...

    Fire Eel

the fire eel does grow very slow, he was about 7cm when when i bought him. he grew quite slow in the first 3 months till he reached about 20 cm. after that he grew to 45 cm in 4 months. He then stopped growing for some or other reason and in the last year he started growing again. so it looks...

    Fire Eel

fire eels are generally quite peacefull. i have one that is 4 years old and about 55cm (almost 2 foot) it's never eaten another fish. He lives happily with a 15cm zebra spiny, some angels, botia's etc. The tyre tracks are the ones to watch out for. follow this link...

    tyre track eels

i've also never seen a eel eat snails of any kind. @francis: no worries about the platies it was a long time ago. i've learnt a lot since then. currently i am breeding rainbows, obviously not in the same tank as the eels. edit: francis the quicker you get the eel into a bigger tank the...

    tyre track eels

Also had problems with my tyre track eel. He ate all the neons in my tank then some platies had fry and he ate the fry and eventually the platies too. heard from somebody that if you feed them high protien foods in big enough quantities they start ignoring live prey. Needles to say it cost me an...

    fire eel feeding

i also just rinse and feed. None of my eels have ever gotten sick from earthworms. I guess if you have no chemicals like poisons or fertiliser in the soil all should be fine. luckily in south africa we have very little trouble with chemicals and such in the soil. I once used normal garden soil...

    fire eel feeding

i have 4 eels at the moment a 55cm (almost 2 foot) fire eel, 40cm tyre track eel, a 10cm tyre track eel and a 24cm zebra spiny. they all started out eating bloodworm which was a bit of a problem initially, however what i have found to work best is to get them to eat out of your hand. defrost...

    Mix of Rainbow fish

Elisabeth83 - my bosmani's and red rainbows school together. in general in my limited experience rainbows are some of the most peacefull and docile fish around. i have never seen a rainbow show any aggression towards any other fish. if you can get a couple of different rainbows it looks...

    Rainbow fish & Gouramis

@elizabeth83: i keep bosmani and red rainbows with a golden gourami pair and keep my neon blue rainbows with a blue gourami. They all get along well. With gourami's in my limited experience it is best to either keep a pair (male and female) or just a single specimen, i had three golden...

    Really wierd question!!!

you can try some Cory Cats they do not eat the poo but they are diggers and on a sandy substrate they dig all the time. When they dig they stir the sand (which is also a good thing with a sandy substrate it releases all the nasty gas build up in the sand) when stirring up the sand the poo gets...

    Top dwelling shoaling fish

you can also try some rainbows. the (dwarf) neon blue rainbow stays small about 2 to 2.5 inches they are schooling fish and only occupy the top part of the aquarium. they are beautifull fish with blue iridescent bodys, the male has red fins and the female has yellow fins. I have a school of 10...

    easy water change???

Sitting with two Aquariums, a four foot more or less 300L and a five foot more or less 500L. I keep rainbows, rams, clowns, Pakistani loaches, gouramis, khuli loaches, bristle noses and eels. In the 500L I have a monster fire eel (55cm) that eats liver so 50% water changes are done at least once...
