Vote Now! - February 2021 Tank of the Month (31 Gallons and larger)

This is my 36 gallon bowfront, I purchased the tank in sept-oct 2020 Substrate: fluval Stratum Water: "ShrimpMineral" remineralized RO Ph: 6 Kh: 3 Gh: 3 Co2 injection: Yes Filter: fluval 307 W/ 2 kilos biohome ultimate Ferts: nilocg shrimp safe liquid, and iron Flourish, and homemade...

    Staghorn algae

I've had super thick staghorn in my Xmas moss for months since before I added co2, used flourish for 3 weeks, got up to 7.5 ml per day in 30 gal of water and it's still there, tried alternating and treating with 2ml h2o2 per gal at night, man this stuff is tough. Looks like it's being eaten by a...

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

Did a bunch more research last night, turns out you could have fed that filter vodka, methanol, grenadine, sugar water.....didn't need to buy those expensive tablets....any simple source of carbon. In the substrate decaying organic matter is the carbon source Also you're right, they are still...

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

That's funny, and definitely do-able. I know approx 80% of the surface area of my tank is plants NOW, I wouldn't consider it "mucking around" because it was more of a Ron Popeile "set it and forget it" kinda thing?

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

Thank you so much! I think it's gorgeous, I love it, it brings me so much peace and joy. You've got me convinced, But I've seen ones that brought tears to my eyes (international aquascaping competition I think) so I've set a pretty high bar for myself ?, it's so much more than "pets" ....it's a...

Thanks, I appreciate that! I was thinking about it, just real overgrown and jungle like right now.

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

This is a great insight And it makes perfect sense, and as you stated before water changes are necessary from time to time. I do them weekly....but I'm not forced to do it because of nitrates, and my fish don't need to suffer because I'm lazy and forgetful. Truth is, most people have severely...

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

That's interesting about the filters, the link I attached to my OP mentions that it's been known about in the marine aquarium hobby for decades, but it's almost unheard of in the freshwater community. I had to use very specific search terms to find sources outside of pondguru

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

Absolutely, water changes are a must ( but not for nitrate removal in a properly set up tank) And I still vacuum the gravel, not much surface area I can get to, but I vacuum what I can....lol besides...I gotta feed the detritus worms or the planaria might starve?

That's cool, hope to speak to some fellow scientists. I'm a mycologist and I've studied soil biology for 25 years

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

So here is my tank now, the substrate is fluval stratum and it's between 3.5 and 4" throughout the tank. I realize that people may think the plants are playing a role (which they are), but I've had perfect water for months, since the plants were negligible... It's 36 gallon with a fluval 307...

nitrification, denitrification, the COMPLETE cycle & perfect water

There are many cycling how-to's out there and they will all get you from ammonia, to nitrate which is removed by water changes, this is called the nitrification process. Any of these guides can and should be followed, however with minor modifications to your tank setup, you and also harbor...

    Water parameters really high

As am I. I paid over $160 for the 4" of fluval stratum in my tank and it's doing the job I needed it to do. P.s. it's also porous and has infinitely more surface area than sand

    Water parameters really high

Seems like everyone just wants to argue. Have a nice day guys. I'm out, you got nothing to lose by trying and everything to gain. I hoped this would be a cool place to share ideas and spread knowledge Guess I was wrong. Climate deniers Mask and covid deniers And now nitrogen deniers. Thanks but...

    Water parameters really high

Only reason it's not practical is #1 substrate is expensive #2 until recently ALL media was designed to harbor aerobic bacteria ONLY. And everyone saying it's hype hasn't used it, or didn't use ENOUGH...

    dkh/ph/Co2 in a low ph tank ❓

Any idea how long phosphate absorber would lower Ph, just remembered I have a pouch of that in my filter. Been in there a couple months Edit: just measured the ec and read the directions again. I've been mixing my salts about 100uS too dilute. Removing 5g more water and replacing with triple my...

    dkh/ph/Co2 in a low ph tank ❓

So odd, I just siphoned out 5 gallons and topped off with 5 gallons of high ph (8.8) ro/di water, waited 30 minutes, and my pH dropped to 5.5, don't think I'm gonna get away with not adding the gh booster

    dkh/ph/Co2 in a low ph tank ❓

Very good information to have. So you're saying maybe do straight RO water between oh adjusted water changes? Although I was just reading about exhausting the kh buffering abilities of the soil with constant addition of kh+ to achieve a more neutral Ph, I also have flourish

    dkh/ph/Co2 in a low ph tank ❓

Makes sense, and yes, the snails are dissolving. I've been fishing them out and moving them to the CPO tank. I'll try a couple larger water changes as well as adding a source of calcium carbonate (hobby lobby has sea shells) like you suggested and see if that helps. They're definitely flashing...

    Water parameters really high

Stolen from "pimp my filter" on youtube: WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE? *If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on* A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to...

    Water parameters really high

Yes, but it's not necessary. That's the info I'm trying to spread, it certainly wasn't heavily planted at 4 weeks. Most aquarists don't understand the COMPLETE nitrogen cycle. They use the words but it's an improper usage, a complete nitrogen cycle involves the anaerobic bacteria that break...

    Water parameters really high

True, I'm not familiar with your substrate, but "active" substrates tend to raise the ammonia levels temporarily
  27. P

    Water parameters really high

I don't recommend, because I don't want to be responsible for your fish, I used another brand of bacteria, but I used two ENTIRE 12 oz bottles on two separate occasions with 4" of substrate and I had a COMPLETE nitrogen cycle in 4 weeks 0 ammonia 0 nitrate 0 nitrite, I clean the glass once every...

    dkh/ph/Co2 in a low ph tank ❓

I've been working on my first planted aquarium, my pH is usually 6 without Co2 and gets down to 5.8 with Co2 on. My concern is a dkh of 3 and a ph of 6 equates to 90 ppm, but at 5.8, that's the range where my plants really start streaming oxygen bubbles within 2 hours of lights on (sunrise...

    Perfect water, planted aquarium, flashing

Hello, I am new here, I have a 36 gallon heavily planted, well established aquarium with a COMPLETE nitrogen cycle. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite & 0 nitrate at all times. I've accomplished this by oversizing my filter and using biohome ultra media to establish anaerobic bacteria as well as using an...
