Doesn't it depend on where you get water, and what fish and plants you keep? For example, I just started a planted tank, and I want to put tetras in there. It's a 50-gallon tank, and even if I house 50 tetras in it, I don't think their Co2 and waste will be enough for the plants to thrive. So...

That tank looks wicked! I have a thing for anubias, and I like that it's in a sweet spot on your tank. Oh, and that cabinet looks sturdy as heck.

Thanks! There will be rocks at the base of the hills and the wood. I'm also going to widen the base of the hill and reduce the foreground sand area, to create more space for the rocks and plants. Still a long way to go!

That's the idea. I will keep the Co2 on while cycling, and then take it out gradually as I add fish. Or I could skip the Co2 altogether and just stick to ferts!

The guide I'm following said leave the male in until the fry are free-swimming, that's why I didn't take the male out right away. I'll try your suggestion on the next attempt. thanks!

I agree with @itiwhetu.. a tank that size should hold a lot of female bettas and a lot of tankmates! For tankmates, I would suggest white cloud mountain minnows for the top of the tank, loads of tetras (ember, cardinal, rummy nose) for the middle, otos and kuhli loaches for the bottom.
