You have lots of fish but not much of plants, so most likely the nitrate level is high. That plus the amount of light you have will stimulate algae growth. Try adding more fast growing plants (e.g. hornwort & amazon frogbit) to suck up the nutrients and more snail to eat the algae.

With your tank size you can choose which one you prefer. Each has its own way of handling.

3 fancy goldfish would be ideal, in any breed you like. They will live happily and can grow to their potential size in there. Adding more fish will lead to more frequent water change as the nitrate level will spike quickly, unless you have good size sump filter with lots of plants.

Nitrate will drop when you reduce the source...that's for sure, it is easy solution. If that is work best for you and the fish then it's good. However there are still view option out there to reduce nitrate that I haven't try, so I will keep looking and trying. Wish me luck :)

My tank has been running mature for 3 months now but I just kept these fancy for 1.5. What food did you fed them? I gave them Mizuho goldfish pellets and frozen blood worm, and peas once a week. Sometimes also broccoli.

Thanks for the picture. I've tried using sand, stone and plants as a decor but some foods and waste always getting stuck in there, make it difficult to siphon. And my fish seems don't care to play with bubbles, she just focused on begging for food all the time :fish:

Hi essjay, I just did another test this morning and my nitrite has 0 ppm! Happy and amaze how everything went so fast in just one day. Now should I give another full dose (3 ppm) ammonia and make a test after 24 hours? Some people suggest to add 1 to 3 ppm gradually, what do you think?

That might be true, I got 5 ppm nitrite already at day 7 and I keep added 3 ppm ammonia few times. Also it's quite difficult to see the difference between 2 and 5 ppm from API test kit, so what I saw as 2 ppm could be wrong. Ok, I will empty the tank tonight and add 1 ppm ammonia.

Hi Jan Cavalieri, when cycle has stalled with the nitrite is it because I fed to much ammonia so the bacteria is overpopulation? And that will inhibits nitrite bacterial growth? I read in some forum thread a big water change will help to lower it, what do you think? Thanks for the suggestion...
