    Psychology to allow for MTS

Some people are weird. And not in the good, interesting-quirky way. Just in the no-imagination/lack of curiosity way.

    Psychology to allow for MTS

I must say, I would probably like your wife. Anyone who suffers through allergies for the sake of a pet is likely a good sort! :)

    Psychology to allow for MTS

It's so odd that animal-people don't get together. There always seems to be one person in each couple that has to be talked-into getting animals. My husband tries to put the breaks on me and the kids but he's a softer-sell than he likes to think he is. He talks tough and swears "no more...

Does this look like hydra to you?

Hi! Did you get the microscope camera? If so, do you recommend it? I have similar critters in my tank and would love to take better photos than what my phone can take.

What the...??? Please tell me what these are.

I'll check out the other thread, thanks! Freshwater tank. The substrate is sand, but these are all attached near the top. Of course, I imagine there are small particles of sand getting sucked up by the filter and these critters are taking the granules from the flow.

What the...??? Please tell me what these are.

Yes, these are the photos and video I took after I put the whatever-they-ares under the microscope. To the naked-eye, they are just little gray flecks, less than a millimeter long. Under the microscope, they look like pretty little flower-things. So odd!!

Oh, I forgot to put one of the pictures up. This one shows the little bell-things better.

I'm not sure about hydra. I looked those up and they appear different. Do my picture and gif come through? I see them on my end, but I don't know if others can see them.

Bitten Good by the Saltwater Bug

I don't have anything to contribute here but I just want to say that my son will also be 16 this month and if he was interested in keeping an aquarium of any sort and did all the research that you've done here, I would get him whatever size aquarium he wanted. Seriously, kudos to you for...

What the...??? Please tell me what these are.

Hi, The title says it all really. I have no idea what this is and am hoping someone can identify it/them. There are many of these things attached to the glass of my aquarium. To the eye, they look like little gray flecks partially stuck to the glass. So far, they are only in the area where the...

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

I'm starting to look at the "earth eater" cichlid types. I've never heard of that before as I've never previously considered cichlids. I will be doing some research on the different types and ones that might be suitable in my aquarium size. I have sand substrate and the behavior of foraging and...

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

African butterfly fish look really cool but from what I've read they mostly stay still near the top of the water. I'm looking for something more active. Definitely no breeding as I have nowhere to put babies.

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

I would love to have oscars. The grumpy faces are so endearing. If only I had a larger tank. ~Sigh!~ Maybe one day... :) I will look up the other species you mention. Thank you!

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

13" from front to back. 21" tall, 48" long. The narrow front to back dimension is why I wouldn't put anything too large in there. I dont want the space to feel cramped for the residents.

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

Thank you. I will research the species you mention. I only know of one store nearby that I've regularly seen killifish, so availability might be an issue, but I suppose I could order online once the weather is warmer if I decide to go with something like that.

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

I love silver dollars but my research on them suggests that they are large and need to be in groups of at least 6, and need to be in a minimum of 75 gallons, preferably 125. A larger tank is on my wishlist, but until it materializes, I can't consider them unfortunately.

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

The blue acara is actually on my "research further" list. I saw a juvenile green terror at a pet store that was hiding behind the filter and it looked so cute. I researched it but from what I read, it will grow too large for a 55 gallon tank. The blue acara is mentioned in wikipedia as being...

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

Hmmm. What kind of behavior interests me.... Good question. I would say foraging and interaction with the environment are probably the most interesting behaviors to me. I love watching critters poke about and look at/interact with things in the aquarium. I have a 55g with crayfish in it and they...

My Pearl Gouramis are terrified of me

I found pearl gouramis to be really skittish as well. They were in a heavily planted tank with moderate foot-traffic nearby, but they never really looked comfortable. They only lived about 2 years, sadly. I haven't been brave enough to try them again. I hope you figure things out and have better...

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

Hi! I am considering a species-only or even a specimen-only tank and am looking for suggestions. I prefer something that will have interesting behavior to watch, not something that will just sit in one spot in the aquarium most of the day. The aquarium is a 55 gallon long. My water is soft and...

I think the impossible happened in my aquarium...

If you have a HOB filter with an intake tube, you might want to dump your filter into a bucket to make sure there aren't any fry in there. When I had cories I ended up with fry on a reasonably regular basis. While most of the eggs were cheerily consumed by the other fish, there were some that...

Kissers used to be common… don’t see them much anymore… they do seem to be a little strange

Hopefully this means that fish stores are more knowledgeable about the unsuitability of these fish for the average person.

    Display tank stocking ideas ?

Agreed. The tanks are too small for the number of fish you are contemplating putting in there. Especially with the idea of breeding, which by definition means you are increasing the numbers. Small tanks are best used for small numbers of small fish. Also, I second the concern over the water...

    Wild crayfish help please

So, she scared me half to death the other day. I saw her behind some driftwood with one of her main front claws in an unusual angle. Closer inspection showed the claw and accompanying arm to be completely disconnected from her body. ACK!! Then I noticed her other main front claw was also...

VOTE NOW - September 2023 Pet of the Month Contest

This is Beauregard. We got him from a shelter in New Hampshire but he was originally found in West Virginia. It is common to have dogs shipped to New England from the South as there are fewer unwanted litters here and too many unwanted dogs there. He was found as a stray and they estimated his...

I found out why she was hiding. She must have had eggs, because a few days ago she came out into the open areas looking like this (her hind leg was broken when I found her btw): The next day she had significantly fewer on her, so I checked the filter. I have a HOB filter and I've had fry get...
