Can fish survive a 1-month period?

We have been through the inappropriate stocking here several times in the past, to no avail obviously.

Hi Nick, no idea TBH. I have tried all sorts of ways and keep getting a security message instead, or the loading just times out. I have tried on all different devices and have never been able to. Have also asked the forum moderators and have had no resolution. Good luck in TOTM.

    Yellow Labidochromis cichlid

Mine do both. All African cichlids require rocks and caves to be happy as this is what best replicates their natural environment. It is best for them if you provide some places for them to hide if they feel threatened or need shelter.

    Increase filtration

The FX6 will definitely help you, but as Byron said it isn't a replacement for water changes. But is really is a beast of a filter - I have an FX6 and a 306 on my 60 gallon African tank. I had to go overseas for 5 weeks last year, so that meant no water changes, just 3 weekly feeds when my...

Copepods during cycling, 90% water change!???

Hey Tom :) I would stick to doing a big water change at the end of a new cycle. This is the best way to provide a happy and healthy environment for your new fishy friends. If you're worried about losing too many of your copepods, I wouldn't stress about it. You won't be able to get all of them...

    Increase filtration

I would remove the smallest of your canisters and replace it with something like a fluval FX6 - they are great for African tanks. While the new filter is getting established with good bacteria, the existing filter (either the 405 or 406) should be able to handle the extra load - but just in...

I'm going to get lynched !

Also - what filter are you running on this tank? African cichlids require really efficient filtration and high water flow as they are messy fish. I would recommend a good quality canister such as a fluval FX6. You will also need to do large, regular water changes - 60% minimum each week. Can...

I'm going to get lynched !

My first advice would be to not add any other fish to that tank. Your frontosas are pretty big and the pleco will turn into a tank buster too. The pictus catfish is a south American species and therefore not compatible with the frontosas as their requirements in terms of pH etc are completely...

55 Liter AquaNano 40 Tank Fish Selection Help!

If you're speaking of African cichlids, this tank is way too small for them. They need a 55 GALLON tank as a minimum. They are also not suitable for beginners.

Hi guys, I have tried on several occasions to post photos on this forum and I have never been able to. I would also not rely on using fish food as an ammonia source, it is very difficult to dose it accurately. A bottled source designed specifically for tank cycling is a much better/easier option.

    Cichlid Tank

African cichlids require really high water flow. I have 2 canister filters plus a gyre generator on my tank running 24/7 and they seem really happy. You're right though, your tank is really small for Africans.

    Low maintenance planting advice

In my experience java fern is really hardy so would be a good choice for low maintenance/low tech tanks. I also have val and anubias is my axolotl tank - the temp stays at 18 degrees Celsius and is very dimly lit (axies prefer cold and dark water) and the plants are doing really well. I just...

I paint the outside surface of the back wall with matte black chalkboard paint. Wait until each coat dries completely before adding the next. I just keep adding coats until I can't see any light coming through to the front.

    Hello everyone

welcome, what fish do you keep?
  27. luca1980

    Water change question

Agree with all above. The same should be said for axolotls. Pet shops etc often simply have no idea regarding their special needs and they inevitably end up suffering at the hands of misinformed (albeit well meaning) owners.

Really good for beginners, and if you're lucky you will get some fry as they breed fairly easily in my experience. Get a group of at 5 or 6, they're great :)

    Assasin snail for snail problem

Snails are a good thing, and they are inevitable in a planted tank. If you reduce feeding, gradually their numbers will start to decline due to their depleted food source. Often introducing an animal to deal with a problem causes a host of other issues. I would just leave the snails and let them...

    Problems with 40 gal tank.

Using fish food for ammonia is really unreliable and very difficult to do accurately. Most fish foods these days are also designed to NOT release ammonia into the water. This sounds like an uncycled tank to me.

    Question for axolotl/newt keepers

Water temp is kept at a constant 18 degrees Celsius which is ideal for axolotls. I do 50% water changes weekly and my latest results from the API master test kit indicated that ammonia is zero.

    Question for axolotl/newt keepers

Hi betta fish, thanks for your reply. I do hold food up to their mouths to eat and I wiggle it from side to side. I found that if I leave food in a dish for them or in front of their face it usually got ignored and then just started to deteriorate the water quality. I did however, start two worm...
