Mine do both. All African cichlids require rocks and caves to be happy as this is what best replicates their natural environment. It is best for them if you provide some places for them to hide if they feel threatened or need shelter.

I would also not rely on using fish food as an ammonia source, it is very difficult to dose it accurately. A bottled source designed specifically for tank cycling is a much better/easier option.

African cichlids require really high water flow. I have 2 canister filters plus a gyre generator on my tank running 24/7 and they seem really happy. You're right though, your tank is really small for Africans.

Agree with all above. The same should be said for axolotls. Pet shops etc often simply have no idea regarding their special needs and they inevitably end up suffering at the hands of misinformed (albeit well meaning) owners.

Using fish food for ammonia is really unreliable and very difficult to do accurately. Most fish foods these days are also designed to NOT release ammonia into the water. This sounds like an uncycled tank to me.

Water temp is kept at a constant 18 degrees Celsius which is ideal for axolotls. I do 50% water changes weekly and my latest results from the API master test kit indicated that ammonia is zero.
