I have a dilemma.
The ballast unit on my Aquamatna 250 Ltr tank stopped working last week. Namely, the lights switch on for a few seconds before shutting down. A replacement unit (complete) isn't an option because it is no longer made. The unit itself is sealed so I can't even get at the ballast...
My Betta lives very well in my tank (260ltr). His tank mates are a few Platies & 60+ Tetras including Penguins, Neons & Glowligths. He's been in the tank for nearly 2 years without any problems.
Reading some of the previous posts I must have one of the most peaceful Bettas ever.
I changed from gravel to sand in my 260ltr'
The Corys love it.
I used the same method as described by Fluttermouth & it worked perfectly. It took me about 5 hours but it was so worth it. As long as you reuse as much of the original water as you can the fish won't get too stressed.
I have a tank full of Tetras 60+ (260ltr). The Penguin Tetras and the Glass Catfish shoal very well but my Glowlights tend to stick together at the back of the tank.
I have a 260ltr tank with over 60 tetras. I run an Aquamanta 300 external filter. The cost new is less than £100 and it works very well. Its easy to clean, replacement parts from LFS are easily obtainable & piming it after removal is simple.
All in all a good external filter.
I have a 260ltr tank fully cycled (over 1 year) with a 50 tetras (small) of various types. I have 10 penguins. Recently one has become unsociable, she spends most of her time in the centre of the tank mid water.
When any of the other penguins come close she chases them away occasionally...
Looking at items available in my LFS I found a submersible UL light & from the look of it I assume it goes in the main tank.
my questions are -
Would one be an asset to my tank & why?
What does it do?
Where should I place it should I buy one?
I have a 240Ltr tank with Tetras.
Living in North London (UK) my nearest store is Pets at Home, I have to say that I've never had any problems with them. Admittedly there are a couple of staff who have a limited knowledge but they always ask other members of staff when confronted with something they don't know.
There are people...
I do still have the loach. I am not sure what species it is I'll get a picture of it and perhaps some one could identify it for me.
Caspers tank mates are Penguin, Glowlight, NeonTetras, Glass catfish, Pepper Cory's & Platys.
Tank is 260L
Water changes 25% every 5 days
Ammonia - 0
NO2 - 0
NO3 - 20
Water temp 26 - 27 degrees C (in the current heat wave (UK)
Food - Variable, Flake, Frozen and Occasionally Live.
The white part you can see in the second picture is exactly what I'm concerned about. There appears to be a...
This morning I noticed that Casper my blue betta was not acting his usual self. He was under a branch and appeared to be using it to prevent himself from floating upwards. When he did move he went to the surface and just drifted there.
I took a good look at him and noticed some white spots on...
Thanks for the advice.
My tank (240L) only has 3 plants and they all appear to be growing well. I don't have a CO2 system so I guess at this time I don't really need one.
But I will bear it in mind for the future.
I have seen mention of CO2 diffusers and I would like to know
What are they?
What do they do?
How do they work?
Is it worth buying one?
Any information would be helpful.
This isn't much of an Emergency but it could lead to one.
I have a small 40ltr tank with a few Platys (6).
Unusually for the UK we have a bit of a summer at the moment and I have noticed that the temperature of my tank rose from 25 degrees C (77F) to 31C (88F) yesterday evening. I removed some...
I live in a very hard water area (NW London) and my fish don't appear to be affected.
The PH in my tanks remain around the 8.0 mark. I have Tetras, Danios, Platys, Corys and Glass Catfish and 1 Betta who have been together for over a year..
As N0body says Tetras prefer to be in groups of 6+.
I have a 5ft tank, 260ltr with tetras
Neons, Penguins, Glowlights & a few Platys and Corys.
Tetras are all in groups of 12 and they get on well together.
I would add a few more to bring the numbers up. That should cure your problem and stop the...
An air pump rated at 0-200 litres will certainly be ok for your 180. With air pumps it really doesn't matter on the rating as the air/oxygen is absorbed into the water at the surface so as long as there is agitation (movement) on the surface your fish will be ok.
Any air flow/bubbles is a bonus.
I have the same pump/vacuum as you.
Place the large end in the tank, make sure that the small end is in a bucket and that the bucket (with the small end) is lower than the pickup (large end), squeeze the pump a few times until the flow starts. It will then syphon.
To stop the flow lift the small...
I know that this sounds sad but I spent over an hour today watching the tank. Initially I was trying to photograph the fish but I took the opportunity to watch the Betta. No flaring, and he seems to peacefully patrol midtank away from the water flow. He does not appear aggressive towards any of...
The clove oil is the best option.
Any fish death is sad
I found that removing the injured party to a separate bowl/tank add an amount of clove oil AFTER you've put the fish in. Its as quick and less painful to the fish as other methods.
Hope you never have cause to do it again.
It depends on what they are going to use. Some companies use airborne chemicals, this could have serious consequences as the chemicals will be absorbed into the water of your tank in the same way as oxygen does. I would go with the clingfilm and turn off any air pump you have.
The bigger the...
When I checked my tank this morning I noticed that one of my Harlequin Rasboras was missing an eye. This caused me to look closer at my shoal, I found two others with one eye missing. None of them appear distressed or injured in any other way.
I have not seen any fish being aggressive towards...
RIP Squirt.
Don't stress too much, his passing may not have been a result of being caught in the new water stream. It could have been any number of reasons.
6 Pepper Corys would be ok I have 10 in my 260ltr with coarse gravel and they seem to do fine.
Sand is much better though.
Midwater wise I have 6 glass catfish. they all get on well.
Like Fishaholic says I'd do a very large water change just before you go (80%+) and the same again immediately upon your return. Pre dose your food in separate containers (daily medical container is a good choice) for your neighbours so they don't over feed.
Good luck and enjoy the holiday.
Thanks for the advice, I didn't think I was over feeding but I will reduce the amount and frequency. I'll get a few more assassins and see how things go. I'll keep you updated.
My 260ltr tank has acquired some unwelcome visitors.
Snails.
At first I only saw two and thought two would be ok in such a large tank. After a couple of weeks they had increased in number so I removed all the ones I could find (about 20).
I have tried API snail remover (no joy).
I have bought 3...
