    is there any other way

Depends what type of filtering you are referring to. If it's to get rid of their waste(solid) and to circulate water the answer is no. If you want to just keep the water clear and fresh, then I would suggest you plant a lot of oxgenators in the water. A well planted pond will act as a biological...

    Bottom feeders don't "count"

Sorry to have to disagree with your friend fishlips, but I must agree with the majority in this case. ALL fish count in an aquarium, even the humble eel which you never see, but they count. The reason all fish count and not just fish but snails and any other inverts you may have, is that they...

    aquarium safe silicone

Skiltrip, if in doubt try contacting an internet aquatic store via your search engine and then using their contact us or e-mail us facility. Ask. If they are worth anything at all, they will give you the advice you want and probably look to selling you the product themselves. That's the name of...

    Vacation Feeder

To answer your question feline, your water change rule is not a hard and fast one. It is perfectly alright if you miss a couple of weeks. Depending on your stocking(and I don't mean the ones you wear :*) or maybe I do  )levels, anyway you can leave the water unchanged for a month as long...

    Vacation Feeder

Thanks for the helping hand reg. vacation blocks are composed mainly from calcium carbonate(chalk), but it is a neutral buffer in water. For a week or so it's better to get some sort of food rather than none at all. Good advice though regarding the testing of the food dispenser.

    Vacation Feeder

I can answer two of your three questions, the third I can't answer because I don't live in the states. So to your answer your first question: I am assuming that you want to know how long the food would last rater than how long the unit lasts! You can purchase them that contain food for 1 week or...

    Our New Pond

Thanks everybody for your lovely comments, which I have duly passed onto my wife. Like a typical bloke I enjoy the labours of my wife's hard work. Nothing better than coming home after a hard days work, open a bottle of beer or wine and sit and relax with a bar-be smouldering in the background...

    Setting up new aquarium

If it's a coldwater setup you want then your choice of plants are as vast as tropicals. It depends how you want your plants in your tank. If you want oxgenators or surface floaters or decorative. Most goldfish including Koi will eat your plants. The only thing you can do is have your plants well...

    Wild Trout,Minnowsand Sticklebacks

    Co2 system for £14-99

Sorry Bigfish, I know that it's annoying asking a question to a question, but why do you want a CO2 unit? Is your aquarium heavily planted or are your plants suffering in any way? If the answer is no, then you probably don't NEED a CO2 system, you might fancy or like one, but don't need one...

    Wild Trout,Minnowsand Sticklebacks

As some of you are probably aware, I recently caught some baby minnows, sticklebacks and wild trout for my back garden pond. I have around 50 in this pond(mixed). Due to their new environment where no predators exist, I'm just wondering how long these fish will live for, how big they will get and...

    Sharks

I hope you have a large tank for them. If as CFC says they are in the whale catfish catagory, they will need a large tank as they can get quite skittish, especially when they are adults.

Would this treatment kill my fishies?

I gave up years ago treating my tank for things such as flukes, white spot etc. by purchasing an O2zonator. It kills all protozoans dead. It does however have contra-indications, but the long term effect is brill. If you can purchase one I would do so, saves loads of money in meds. in the long term.

    Tetra problems

To see neons/cardinals at their best you need to have a shoal. I have 20 in my tank (obviously tank size does matter) they look really stunning when they all turn together. With regards to a fat belly, that maybe due to a bacterial infection in the gut or maybe pregnant or the beginnings of neon...

    Keep your water quality pure

To answer your question re: nitra-zorb taking in all the bacterial food. The answer I'm gonna give you is going to be debateable. I personally would say no. This is because there will be detritus in the bottom of the tank,in the substrate that nitra-zorb won't take in. Bio-chem zorb/Phos-zorb...

    My new tank update!

This is Ciclidmaster's field of expertise I should think. As to bottom feeders, you have an array to chose from. It depends what you want of them. If you want scavangers, there's the Cory species, they are always a favorite, or if you want algae eaters, there are the Ottos and smaller Plecs...

    Keep your water quality pure

Something that may be of use for those of you who want perfect water. I have been using Bio Chem-Zorb,Nitra-Zorb and Phos-Zorb for the last year now with great results. I just place the pouches inside my cannister power filter and forget it for around 10 weeks. (sometimes a bit longer)All my...

    Thorough tank cleaning.

The old adage applies here, If it's not broken, don't fix it. Translating this to your tank-well if the fish are happy and you are not having any problems, why change it? If the fish were in nature, who would move their rocks? It seems that the nirtogen cycle is working properly, so unless you...

Water changes -- how do you do this???

Most fish, including Bettas can tolerate minor temp. changes to their environment. When you do a water change or a clean, you obviously don't take hours over it. To equate the water temp. from the tap to the tank, I have a normal thermometer that I dip into the treated tapwater. When I top up...

    cottonmouth(?) update

If things are looking, "normal", I would return the carbon back to the filter and do a water test in a few days to make sure the water parameters are back to normal. Hopefully the fungal spores haven't spread. What is the temp. inyour main tank? 26C or above? The spores would have matured within...

    cottonmouth(?) update

Personally speaking it doesn't matter too greatly if you do a massive water change or not. If the infection is in the water aready there's not much point. Once you put the carbon back into action it'll remove the meds. anyway. I know it's always easy in retrospect, but you should have...

Quick question for my fellow fish keepers....

Ditto. In fact we used to go to restaurants that had fish in tanks; B) you selected the one you wanted, and the chef would catch it and cook it for you the way you want. This was all in the time BC (before children)  now we're just plain broke!!!

Hi bigfish Yes I have used them in the past. They do take about a week to put your order together. Not advertising or anything, I use...

    cottonmouth(?) update

Cottonwool disease is generally a secodary infection. The primary one probably being an ulcer or a wound due to fighting. If it's on their mouths it could be the result of fighting. You will need a combined bacteracide/fungicide. See your lfs and ask if they can recommend a treatment for...

    Live plants

First of all and this seems a silly question to ask you, but, were the plants you bought from the shop healthy with plenty of roots? Were the plants in a mini pot or were they bound with lead weights? Were there any roots on the plants at all? Basically with any plant aquatic or terrestrial, no...

    guppies?

Putting all the fish in together may have caused a sudden bacterial overload in your new setup. Guppies are usually very hardy and robust fish. The fish may have died either due to disease or stress which is a common error amongst new fishkeepers. To answer your question though, I would suggest...

    10 Rules For Healthy Fishkeeping.

    1. TESTING. Before introducing any fish into your tank, buy yourself a good water test kit. Ideally it should contain tests for:Ammonia,Nitrates,Nitrites and Ph. Readings, except for the Ph should all read zero before introducing any fish. 2.TEMPERATURE. Make sure that the temp. in the tank is...
