    Keeping Leftover Plants

Well... Like I just mentioned in another thread, I went ahead and ordered a different filter for my current tank. Something I can run charcoal in. Maybe it will be my starter filter on all my new tanks if I have a problem getting the water cleared up because of a yellow hue. But I don't intend...

    New filter

As far as the eye can see... That's what no ice on the lake will do to a beach o_O Maybe I'll bag it and sell it next year  But seriously, you would think driftwood by nature would already be presoaked. Hard lesson learned. I ordered a Fluval C3 to run that on the tank and see if it helps.

    New filter

I'm betting it is. I saw a video today where they said to soak driftwood for 30 days! Who knew, being it was being sold in an aquarium shop? If I had known that I would have picked some up at the local beach a few weeks ago and started soaking it.

    New filter

My powerhead is just below the waterline on the back of the tank, angled downward towards the front glass. I kept it away from the HOB filter so it wouldn't disrupt the filter's intake current. It's a 15g powerhead in a 27g cube. No fish load in my aquarium yet, but it did stir up some debris...

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Thanks, @Byron If I have less than have left over it would be well worth getting a 10gal framed tank. And then I'll have another tank when they are all used up :)

    New filter

I am putting together a FW aquarium after many years away and added a small powerhead. We used to call them powerheads... wave maker? It is undersized for my aquarium, but as soon as I turned it on it gently agitated stuff off the bottom. Maybe another way to go?

Store bought sea shells in marine tank?

I don't know. Like you said, you're not even sure if it's real or artificial. Although from a gift shop you'd think it was real. Otherwise it's of no value as a souvenir unless it was found locally.

Store bought sea shells in marine tank?

I remember purchasing a sea fan at a gift shop, then placing it in a saltwater tank when I got home. It was rinsed off. And boy did my water get cloudy. I removed it after a day. I'd keep my eye on that dried out starfish if it was real at one time.

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Just the one tank I am setting up, hence the plant order and not knowing what I am doing, lol. I don't really want to set up an aquarium just for plants, nor do I have one handy. I've got buckets... :) But I wouldn't mind buying a cheap tank if that makes things easier and better to sustain...

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Beats me  I ordered a few I wanted, but the majority all I know is it's supposed to be comprised of foreground, midground and background.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of setting them in a sunny spot, too. But I also have a light. And a heater if need be. Complete water change?

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Good info, @Byron So basically it's like setting up another tank minus the substrate, but I can leave the plants bundled as they came. The local shop should be able to outfit me when I see how many I have left over.

    Keeping Leftover Plants

I ordered some plants online and between liking the overall look of my tank currently (lots of rocks), and reviewing my order, I'm betting I have more than a few plants leftover after planting things. What do I need to keep them alive until I start on my next tank? Do I need substrate? Can I...

What's with the trend for 'Open' tanks?

Took it down, moved it from one house to another, built it back up, sold it about 15 years ago Kept the cat :)

What's with the trend for 'Open' tanks?

Yes. I was just turning it from SW to a reef, which is why I increased my lights. I've been looking for pics of the aquarium, but I didn't name or sort anything in folders back then.

    What I've done so far.

That sounds nice. I've read 50/50 reviews on mine. Some guys say it works perfect for them with the factory settings in their planted tanks, some say they made a custom program. Some say the light stinks. But like I said in my OP, I needed something and this is what the shop sold me :dunno...

    What I've done so far.

Ah. Mine must have longer cycles of sunrise/set, moonlight and such. Without watching it for 24 hours straight I am just guessing the complete darkness is four hours in a row, but it could be six. I know I can make a custom program if I need to change something, but it means choosing my reds...

That's exactly what mine does. Why is mine potentially harmful for fish but yours isn't? :|

    What I've done so far.

Thanks for all the input. I'm kind of getting used to this Finnex 247. It is certainly odd having some kind of lighting on 20 hours or so... I'm not really sure how long it stays dark. They should give you a chart. I guess I like it, but there are times I'd just as soon see it sitting in the...

    What I've done so far.

I moved some stuff around again  Got rid of a large-ish rock and opened up the small hill in the back to accept plants easier, moved the large rock on the left to the right, creating a larger "lowlands" area, moved the driftwood together (which I think looks more natural). Still not...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I like simple, too :) Your first link is the kit I have on order. Should be here Tues. Your second link doesn't do anything that the pool kit didn't. My GH is 100ppm My alkalinity (also known as KH, right?) is 40ppm. That works out to 2.236, which is low. I'm hoping the plants raise that.

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I'm guessing I'll have some hitchhikers when my plants arrive. I see some guys on YT saying to rub off any eggs you feel, but I'll hang onto them now. Found an interesting chart. According to this my water is considered soft. There seems to be more leeway than I was led to believe. Which is a...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I read that. I just found this article, which shed some light. https://www.thesprucepets.com/hard-water-and-aquarium-fish-1381887 It has me wondering if the water softened from my tap to the tank because I have a couple pieces of driftwood and some topsoil in it?

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I'll have to wait and see what the levels read when my kit comes in and things are planted for a week or two. While I don't want or intend to sacrifice fish, another part of me finds it odd people would artificially help their tank along by squirting ammonia into it. I think I lean towards a...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

Thanks! After some thought I was thinking maybe the thread was more livestock related, since things haven't really started happening yet as far as cycling. I was just trying to get an idea on how my hard water's low rating might affect my choosing of livestock. I was looking for a hardness test...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

Mt tank has been running about a day now. Dragon Stone and organic potting soil underneath CaribSea Eco Planted substrate. The plants are due in next week. I'm getting a grasp on the cycle, something I don't recall doing 25 years ago, and started thinking about water hardness. Apparently the...
