Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Wow. Hard to believe that is how my water looked. I am now free of tannins and have a bacterial bloom going on. So happy to see the tannins gone :) This Fluval rocks.

    Is this hobby addictive?

And the tough part is that I want my nano tank in my living room. I want to SEE my tanks. Like the movie title, something's gotta give.

MTS... I'm guessing that is Multiple Tank Syndrome... ;) Another affliction we did not recognize back in the eighties

Starting 5 gallon betta fish planted tank, I have questions!

That's a great setup. What size tank is that? And those are two tanks, right? Or maybe I can't see the wood in the first pic.

    Is this hobby addictive?

Of course it is! I knew that going in. What I didn't know was that I'd be ordering my third aquarium before I had even one fish in the first! o_O

Starting 5 gallon betta fish planted tank, I have questions!

Yes, it is after his plants are established that he adds just a few fish. Maybe sort of a hybrid Silent/Fish-In. MD Fish Tanks is his channel. The guy builds tanks like I used to collect 1911's lol.

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

On the positive side, I have all kinds of new leaves sprouting from the Glossostigma.

Starting 5 gallon betta fish planted tank, I have questions!

There's a guy on YT who creates beautiful planted tanks with fish right then and there. He said in one of his videos that he can add a few fish right away (which will create the ammonia) and cycle the tank and it won't harm the fish if you do daily water changes. And I'm assuming test the water...

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Yeah, yeah... ;) I'll concentrate on the stuff I planted first. And maybe after I add fish. I do not want to deal with all that swirling stuff every time I trim a plant or add a fish :)

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

I believe I have a plant "melting". I think it is this plant https://www.modernaquarium.com/jungle-vallisneria-americana-set-of-2-plants/ The leaves have gone yellowish and are all hanging at half mast. So I guess I wait and see if any new leaves appear? Then trim away the old leaves?

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

This is interesting. I was searching ammonia in aquariums and came across a thread discussing ammonia spikes after adding plant fertilizer. According to the discussion, the Aqueon plant food he was using did not contain any ammonias, but when adding some drops to water in an API test tube and...

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Thanks. I removed them... mostly. There are still some stragglers that were evading me by taking cover under the rim. I just needed a much more aggressive netting technique. They are in a container in my plant tank awaiting further thought.

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

They were either duckweed or pennywort. I was sent both. They're just so messy because they are so tiny. Like a bunch of gnats on the surface. And I just read something that said the shade they cause can interfere with light getting to the bottom plants. Although they are far from a single...

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

I tried that. The loop moves around the tank because of the HOB's current. Then when it hits a wall things splash into and out of it.

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I was happy just to see the Nitrates go down to 20ppm. At least that is moving in the right direction, even though the Ammonia increased.

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Man, I don't know why I thought I had to add floating plants. Those little things are all over. Every time I want to reach into the tank I get an armful when I remove my arm. I tried to net them out and that wasn't working very well. The slightest current moving towards them pushes them out of...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

Well, my water source does have Nitrates. Supposedly at an acceptable level. I wasn't sure if this was all part of cycling. That is why I wondered if I should remove water or let it play out. Seeing as how there is nothing in the tank but plants. I didn't want to interrupt the cycle. If that's...

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

I guess what I'm wondering is: At this early stage, do I wait and see if the tank will naturally reduce the ammonia? Or do I do a water change?

Water Parameters in new tank? UPDATE with API Master Kit

Here are my results after a few days with plants in the tank. pH--- 7.2ppm Am--- 0.25ppm Trites--- 0.50ppm Trates--- 20ppm So my pH dropped just a little. The Ammonia went up a little. And the Trites and Trates both decreased. Thoughts?

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

It's clearing up a little. I removed the powerhead since this filter is much more powerful and had a lower intake. I also turned down the filter's flow.

    Ah. OK.

    Marineland day/night hood 24"

Scissors, utility knife... On my old tanks the glass was about 1/8" thick. The plastic piece was much thinner. It fit onto the glass using a U clip so you could easily remove it to cut it.

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Just to say... It almost sounds like you are thinking I would use old tank water from an existing fish tank. I was referring to using the water in the plant tank thinking it might be cycling due to the bacterial bloom you said is going on. I would never add old fish tank water to a new setup :)

    Marineland day/night hood 24"

If you can buy a glass lid for the 20 High that would be ideal. Like mentioned, they have a plastic strip you can work with. I had a glass shop make me a lid for two tanks. For instance, if your tank measures 24" x 12" where the glass sits, have them cut the glass (and polish the edges) 23-7/8"...

Thanks, @Byron . I was hoping it would be like adding old substrate to a new tank. That there would be something beneficial going on.

    Marineland day/night hood 24"

Sure. The legs would simply sit on top of the glass instead of the lip around the tank. And as far as the HOB filter, just have the glass supported on three sides. Leave it short so the back is open.

    Marineland day/night hood 24"

I just got this light yesterday and it's sitting on my 20 high (24" long). No long term experience, but it works and comes in under your budget :) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08N4W388K/?tag=ff0d01-20

    Keeping Leftover Plants

Yessir. The leftover plants in their own tank. And it is a white cloudiness. In essence, is this tank cycling just by having the plants in it? Should I save the water when I actually go to set it up and use it? There shouldn't be any chlorine in it, but I did not test for it. I am on well water.

    Keeping Leftover Plants

The water is getting really cloudy. And its only been 36 hours or so. Are you'all sure don't need an airstone or filtration?

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Hmm, the Fluval is certainly a noisier filter. I have turned it down, too, which seems better. All this from an external pump? But it is working much better, so I shouldn't complain.

Help. What have I gotten myself into?

Yep. I'll be interested to test the water again.
