    Boesemans Rainbowfish Hierarchy

That's odd, I normally experience the exact opposite when I add new rainbows. I'd guess he's just trying to establish his place in their hierarchy. IME the biggest rainbowfish isn't always the most dominant. Maybe the little guy is just naturally more assertive than the others.

    Mistakes Made/lessons Learned

For me it was adding too much medication and poisoning the majority of my breeding stock of rainbowfish. I had forgotten that some meds deoxygenate the water and ended up killing the rainbows. Lesson learned was not to administer meds when tired!

Try lowering the water level and then sectioning off the tank with a divider of some sort. Also, waiting until nighttime, when they're less active can also help.

    Silver Dollar Shoal With Geophagus?

Hi tetraodon, I haven't kept silver dollars, but I've kept both altifrons & brasiliensis with active fish (e.g. Rainbowfish, tetras & denisonii) without any problems. I think in a 6' tank, your geos and the silver dollars will probably ignore each other most of the time. i haven't kept...

if possible I'd also like to avoid storing the water overnight. I have a 900l tank and a 450l tank, both get water changes 2-3 times a week, depending how busy I am. I was hoping there'd be an alternative to having a container with 600 odd litres of water in my living room overnight. Boiling it...

Does anyone use one of these? And if so, can you tell me how swiftly it heats the water? I'm thinking of buying one to heat water when I do my water changes, but it needs to be able to heat very cold water very rapidly.

Maybe their claims aren't so far fetched after all. There's at least one scientific paper suggesting it's possible: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0144860909000417 I haven't read the full article, but the abstract suggests it is possible to convert ammonia directly into...

I Found New Research On Tank Bacteria And Commercial Bacteria Starter

This thread is a little old now, but I thought I'd post as its an interesting paper - the DNA sequencing part went straight over my head though! I was curious about a few of things. Firstly, the two samples of bacteria starter had bacteria in different substrates - one in a liquid, the other a...

I don't think you'll have much of an issue with the denisonii barbs - I have them in one of my set ups with geos of varying sizes and I'm yet to see any fin nipping or aggression at all. I think if they have a big enough group, they'll completely ignore all other fish in the tank. I currently...

How Safe Is Aquarium Water To Drink?

Undoubtedly, death by mycobacterium isn't the most statistically frequent way for aquarists to kick the bucket, but that doesn't make it completely innocuous. I would think that ingesting tank water can be harmful if you consume a large enough quantity. I've never cultured bacteria growing in a tank (or known anyone that's tried), but I'd assume tank water is teeming with bacteria. Even if these bacteria are not pathogenic I'd think they can still...
