    Well water suggestions

Sorry to hear about your losses :( Could you provide your exact parameters—ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, as well as pH, KH and GH? This will help folks more experienced than myself diagnose the problem more easily. For what it's worth, my parents had an African cichlid tank with well...

    Starting over!

Here's a little peek at my progress on the 30C. I'm avoiding posting a picture from straight on for now, because something about that view is bothering me lol... I think it's the lack of plant height. Hopefully things look better once the stems grow in. I think I'm going to attach more moss to...

    Starting over!

Phew, last week was busy, but I went to the LFS today and bought another piece of wood. I got home and immediately thought it wasn't going to work with the other pieces. After fiddling around with them a little, I think it's looking better than before. Still have to crush/sand down those cut...

    Starting over!

Thank you, that's a great suggestion about the ends of the branches. The 7 gallon will have a few types of buce, anubias nana petite, java fern, and java moss, with some dwarf sag in the front and easy stems in the back. The 4 gallon will just have dwarf hair grass (if I can keep it alive) and...

Thank you! I've watched a lot of aquascaping videos in the last few weeks, haha. Definitely will update this thread once they're planted.

    Starting over!

Nice to meet you! Yes, I'm considering clown killifish or a pea puffer for the 7 gallon, but I'm not sure about the 4 gallon yet. Maybe a betta, or a colony of neocaridina. The possibilities aren't endless with these tiny tanks, but I can't have anything too big as I'm renting an apartment :X

    Starting over!

Hi all! My two nano aquariums, a 30C (7.1 US gallons/27 liters) and a 25C (4 US gallons/15 liters), were getting a little tired and overgrown. I don't have any fish at the moment so I decided to tear them both down and rebuild them. Thought this would be a good time to start a journal on their...

What killed my betta? Should I disinfect my tank?

Thank you all so much for the advice. I'm going to drain and restart the tank (and ditch the glutaraldehyde) like you've suggested—I guess this is a good opportunity to get some new hardscape and substrate. Happy New Year!

What killed my betta? Should I disinfect my tank?

Hi all! Something I've grown to accept is that this hobby can be as distressing as it is gratifying. In my limited experience, I've found that the fragility of the artificial ecosystems we create means that the state of a fish or a tank can turn abruptly. I’m usually here with questions and...

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Coming back to this thread as a last-ditch effort. Since my initial post, I tried salt as Colin suggested and it helped with the mucusy slime coat but not the fin rot. I gave Queenie a break from meds for several weeks and then moved her to a hospital tub to try Furan-2 since she was not...

    Betta throwing up?? Possibly? HELP!!!

I'm not sure if they ever regurgitate food after it reaches their stomach, I've only seen them spit out food while they're eating. I am curious as well though lol!

    Betta throwing up?? Possibly? HELP!!!

You could try soaking the food longer (some dry foods can take up to 10 minutes to completely saturate with water) or switch to another type of pellet. Betta thrive on a varied diet of high quality frozen foods and pellets! I'm not familiar with the Top Fin brand food, but there are a few other...

    Betta throwing up?? Possibly? HELP!!!

Hi! Sometimes a fish's poop will be hard and lumpy when they are constipated; If you haven't seem him throw up these masses, is it possible that this is poop rather than something he is regurgitating? If this is the case, you can try fasting him for a couple of days and see if his system...

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Here are some photos! The white under her chin developed overnight. This morning it was kind of hanging off, now it is just a raised white patch. I thought the meth blue might help but it seems to have made things worse. Or maybe the fungus is sloughing off and I need to do another dip?

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Thanks, Colin, hoping that it isn't cancer but I am suspicious that something is affecting her immune system as you said. I will take some pictures of the fungus when I get home from work!

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Ok, this morning she has some fungus on her lower jaw. It isn't fluffy or soft-looking, but it looks like her mouth is peeling. Should I continue with meth blue for fungus?

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Thanks, that's a good point and maybe it is regrowth! It's hard to tell because her pectoral fins are kind of transparent.

Lump at base of pectoral fin, persistent fin rot

Hi all, I'm back again with an illness that I can't seem to wrangle on my own. I posted in February about recurring scale growths on my betta, Queenie. Her scales looked lumpy and peely, but they were not fuzzy like fungus. I treated her with increased water changes and added tannin-producing...

Urgent - Scale Discoloration and Peeling

Thank you! I'll pick some up today or tomorrow. Do you know if Jungle Fungus Clear is shrimp/snail/cycle safe? I have a quarantine tank that I can treat her in if that would be safer.

Urgent - Scale Discoloration and Peeling

Hey all, Sorry for reviving this old post. The scales on Queenie's head definitely look weird, and the patches I posted originally have continued to progress and are now more noticeable over the entire top of her head. Her head looks... lumpy? I still occasionally notice the "peeling" of single...
