    Guppy Fry

If you don't have a filter (I can't actually see one), then put in lots of plants again, especially some fast growing floating plants like water sprite.

Wow! Thank you for that. I'm not sure how available some of those compounds might be over here but I'll have a look. My tap water varies in nitrates and is probably high in phosphates as phosphorous is added at source. I've toyed with using RO and sometimes think it would be simpler, quite apart...

    Keeping water temperature down

And, to be fair, there have been heatwaves lasting many weeks in the past, like the summer of '76 as remembered on another post!

What’s your worst nightmare regarding your fish/pets?

I was 11 in the summer of '76, which would make me the youngest of us, just. I don't remember having major problems with water in the West Country. We didn't need stand pipes or anything anyway. We had a plague of ladybirds - the sky would be black with them and they were so hungry they'd eat...

    Infusoria producing leaves

Are there different oaks? I've not heard of a specific named oak so I would think any would be fine. No need to be clean, just give it a rinse in clean water. You want it to have tiny organisms of course.

Large amounts of possible hydra or algae

They are very pretty; sort of flower shaped.

Beech leaves will do it. Oak as well.

What’s your worst nightmare regarding your fish/pets?

Ah. The Winter of Discontent. I loved it because we got to have candles everywhere - very exciting. I was actually really disappointed when there were no power cuts the following winter. But I was too young to have fish.

    Snails introduced with plants

If you'd like to have them controlled in the tank then you can get assassin snails which hunt and kill them.

    Snails introduced with plants

I have no idea what they are, but definitely don't release them to the wild. Who knows what diseases they might be carrying, quite apart from the risk of being invasive.

You could always try wetting the outside and blowing a fan on it. Or do that to yourself too?

Botanicals - What is safe and what is not

Oh well. I just keep drinking it instead. It beats black tea, even Earl Grey.

What’s your worst nightmare regarding your fish/pets?

I do. 2 at the moment. But I've had up to 9 at a time when I was rescuing them. I've even taken them into work and converted people into liking them.

    Buckets...

My favourite kit is a 5l jug. It's light to carry and can pour as gently as I like in the fry tank. It means more trips but I find I use it more than my jerry cans.

I had one I drove to the vets sitting on my shoulder. She was a cute rat.

Does rooibos create infusoria? I'd like to know so that I could throw a couple of teabags in my fry tank.

I have that dream only with pet rats. It'll mean some sort of anxiety that you are ignoring and not dealing with.

Today, having repeatedly tested and treated nitrite levels in a plant cycled tank I decided to test ammonia too. The nitrites were 0 but ammonia measured 1.0 ! I was pretty surprised and horrified!

Back at it again after 60 years!!

For cleaning gravel you need a gravel siphon which you can buy at any fish shop. They consist of a plastic tube that has a wider end. You start siphoning and then plunge the wider end sequentially deep into the substrate in a regular manner. The dirt rises faster than the substrate (at least it...

    First tank, Superfish 80l

I do happen to have been keeping their water good. Plenty of water changes; every few days. But I suspect these really are 'frisky' fish. Fork is on his 5th nest in 19 days! He's unstoppable. Sadly very few fry have survived from the first batch, but today I put in a small sponge I'd run...
