It sounds like you didn't fully cycle your tank before putting in the fish. It is possible you have ammonia or nitrites in there and might be wise to check for them in case they contributed to the snail death and make matters bad, potentially lethal, for the fish. Your filter is possibly...

Yes, all my other rats have been tame. I suspect B had been squeezed by a child, probably bit it, and was then sent back to the pet shop from where I rehomed him. He was clearly terrified really. But his bites drew blood.

I was worried wild mosquito larvae might be risky, but perhaps I'll give them a try with my gouramis. I had a small wild fish once which I fed up with them before setting it free again. Boy, did that fish love mosquito larvae!

I send mine out regardless of the weather then clean the carpets regularly. I've even walked them in truly horizontal rain in the winter (this is a very inhospitable stretch of coast). But I've no idea how I needed to wash something, unless it was when they were puppies?

Are you bypassing the other fish with a pipette or something so he gets food put right in front of him? It sounds like the others might whisk it away otherwise!

It looks like a swim bladder disease. What temperature is your water and what do you usually feed the fish?

Have you considered nerite snails? They can't work miracles but I find them very helpful.

Is it a spider egg? (Cocoon?)
